COMMANDEERING GREEK SHIPPING (Rec. January 22, G. 15 p.m.) London, January 21. Tho "Daily Chronicle's" Athens correspondent says tho Greek newspapers disouss and oppose the proposal for the taking over of the Greek mercantile marina above four thousand tons by Britain, as this would involve twotin'tds of the Greek shipping. Discontent is expressed at the amount of the indemnity iu caso of loss owing to many ships having been bought at enhanced prices. The Government has not yet received tho details of tbo British demand. Other correspondents state that the scheme enables the Greeks to retain sufficient tonnago to meet the country's necessities. It is understood England offers thirty shillings per ton per month, calculating tho tonnage basis on the weight of tho loaded ship. Tho vessels are to bo taken over until sis months after tho war. It is indicated that if the owners are unwilling to accept tho terms' tho ships would bo commandeered at less favourable rates.-rAus.-N.Z. Cablo Assn.
