OUR TRADE IN WAR TIME
SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE
The Hon. Arthur 31. Myers, Minister of Customs, has furnished the following figures showing New Zealand's external trade for the year 1916, as compared with 1915. The value of goods, produce,' etc., exported during 1916, amounted to £33,286,937, which, compared with 1915 (£31,748,912) shows a very substantial increase of £1,538,025
The value of goods, etc., imported during 1916, also increased considerably, being for 1916, as compared with £21,728,834 for 1915, an increase of £4,610,449.' This excess in value of imports, Mr. Myers points out, is wholly duo to increased values of tho goods purchased, as a return which ho had prepared of tonnage of cargo for New Zealand on vessels arriving from overseas at each port indicates that whereas £1,370,057 tons were landed at Now Zealand ports during 1915, only 1,299,944 tons arrived during 1916— a decrease of 70,113 tons. When compared with the 1914 figures (1,538.755 tarts) tho decrease during 1916 is more pronounced (238,811 tons). On the above figures the value of total trade per head works out approximately at £5-1 45,, imports being £23 19s. per head, and exports £30'5s. per head. The corresponding figures tor 1915 were: £ s. d. Total trade 46 10 8 Imports 18 18 2 Exports 27 12 6 per head. It will be seen that the value of tho total trade per head shows a large increase for 1916 compared with the previous year.
