MANY CONFERENCES IN GERMANY
POLITICAL AND DIPLOMATIC (Rcc. January 20, 8.25 p.m.) London, January 19. Speculation is rife in. London whether tho Swiss invasion rumours ar© associated with the political and diplomatic movements in Berlin. Bethmann-Hollweg had his first secret conforenco with the Roichstag leaders yesterday, and a further conference is to be held next week . Tho Austrian* Premier held a conference with Bethmann-Hollweg in Berlin, and Herr Zimmerman leaves Berlin for Vienna to-day. The' Presidents of the Parliaments of the Central Powers have arrived in Berlin.
Dr. Hoefer, the Austrian Food Director, accompanied the Austrian Premier, and conferred with Dr. Batocki, the German Food Controller. It is understood they discussed economic questions, notably tho Rumanian food captures. Tho German Press alludes to the Food Conference with marked coldness—Aus.-N.Z. Gable Assn.
DISTRESS IN. AUSTRIA (Rec. January 20, 8.30 p.m.) London, January 19. In connection with the Austro-Ger-man Food Conferences, tho details available in London show that tho Austrian distress is most acute, the potato famine being especially severe. Vienna had been promised 283 truck loads daily in Novembor and December, and got an avorago of ninety-five. Since Christmas there has been a further diminution of supplies, and tho prices of the principal foodstuffs are practically prohibitive to most people. The position in Hungary is scarcely better. The professional classes are bitterly crying out. The clergy at Budapest have declared to the newspaper "Ay, Ujsag" that they can't feed and clothe tho children, while the •widows exist at tho lowest stage of misery. The "Ay. Ujsag's" inquiries in other directions reveal tho same distress, notably among teachers. Civil Servants, and oven Judges, who aro resorting to trades to eke out then-resources.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
