A settlement has been arrived at in tho Wellington soft goods employees' dispute Tho new award provides for a gonera! improvement in wages and conditions. Assistants sixteen years of ago and under entering tho trndo without previous experience will bo paid not less than tho rate of wages sot out as follows, the wages for females being mentioned between parentheses:—During first year 12s. 6d. (10s.). second year 17s. 6d. (12s. 6d.), third year 225. 6d. (155.), fourth year 30s. (205.), fifth year 355. (255.), sixth year 425. 6d. (275. 6d.), thereafter 655. (355.). An all-round increase of ss. is granted to storomon. Tho wage for casual hands is to bo in tho case of males not less than '.Is. 6d. per hour, and in the caso of females not loss than lOd. an hour. Tho preference clause of tho old award waa adopted, and special provision was made mado for undeivrato workers. Tho award is to come into operation on February 5, and coutinuo in forco over the whole district for a. term of two years.
The nexb meeting of the Federation of Patriotic Relief Societies _ of Now Zealand will bo held in Wellington on February 23.

She has already laid ono of tho shore ends from Titahi Bay, and will resumo work as soon as tho.westerly weather abates. Sho has yot to lay another shore end for tho second cable, after whioh sho will proceed to Australia to lay new shore ends there. It will ho sorao time yot boforo tho shoro ends aro spliced to the cables. The conduits for the land cables have been laid between Wellington and Kaiwarra, after which they will bo laid in practically an open trench. Captain Baronberg is in charge of tho Patrol, and Sir. Salmond is tho chief olectrician.
The Imperial Government has taken over Trammer's Match Factory in land, from which the bulk of tho Australian supply of wooden matches had been obtained. All contracts aro being cancelled, causing uneasiness as regards supplies, though the effect is unlikely to bo felt in tho near futurb owing to tho heavy stocks held.
