WELLINGTON RACES
TO-DAY'S AUSPICES
(By "Glencoe.") ]'vveryihiug augurs well for a most sucm? 8 S&thering at Trentham to-day. the town is crowded with visitors, and hotel accommodation is taxed to the utmost. The usual special train servicc has been arranged by the Itailway Department, and trains will loave every few minutes, both ironi Te Aro and Lambton Stations. Tho card will commence at noon with the Trentham Welter, one mile. Several of the leading stables have representatives in the race. The top-weight, Sleight-of-Hand, will be ridden by A. Oliver, and though he has a vtry big weight, he should give a good account of himself. Spain will be an absentee, but the Australian-bred Plymouth will be a runner, and will be ridden by Emerson. B. Deele.v will have the mount on Tango, and J'\ E. Jones will be on the xmreiiable San Sebastian. Tho two lightweights, Prince Belaware and Le Chat, have both been working extra well, and the latter may bring oft' a surprise. Biplano ami Crowhnrst will be missing from tho Nursery Handicap, five furlongs, leaving Kilna and ilymenestra at the top of the handicap. The Karanm colt seems to be tlio best class in the race, mid lie' may go out favourite. In tlie Foal Stakes at Ullerslie he carried Bst. 101b., and Biplane had all his work out out to get him at five furlongs. Ample is a consistent filly, and Tyne seems to be on the improve. The fact that he will represent It. J. Mason will get him support. He seems a good average little fellow, but there is not much of him. Acre and Birkenvale are on the upward grade, but the others do not read as winners. The Anniversary Welter, one mile, will see Seadown with No. 1 cloth. The big fellow has shown no form for a long time, but he is working well lately. Llanishen, Bst. 131b., has a great reputation, and is thought by some to be better over a middle distance than sprinting. She may. be favourito to-day. The Porirua pair, Piockbound and Coldstream, have been hitting out well on the tan,' but they may not do as well on thp grass. Jlozama has done everthing so far asked of him, but he has not yet met the olass . lie ,will have against him today. The Trial Plate field will dwindle down considerably, and there are not likely to be more than six or seven runners, favouritism will be divided between Ayah and Cheloma, and tho contest between the pair should be most interesting. With these four events over,, the way will be cleared for the big event of tho meeting, for which there are sixteen, rrnners. The following are tho probable starters and their riders:—
St. lb. Merry Roe (E. Hatch) 8 8 John Barleycorn (A. Oliver) S 7 Square Deal (W. Young) 8 :i Indigo (L. Wilson) 8 2 Ardenvhor (H. Lov.'o) 8 2 Wishful (C. liniersoii) 7 12 Adjutant (J. Olsen) 1 7 11 Bunting (A. Heed) 7 9 Bjorneborg (G. Clark) 7 8 Client (H. Young) 7 8 Eangitero (B. Dceley) 7 < Red Ribbon (B. 11. Morris) 7 3 Sedd-el-Bahr (W. Bell) U 10 Devotion (J. Bryce) li 7 Rose I'ink (F. Corlett) 6 7 Mascot (C. Reed) B 7 The top-weight, Merry Roe, is inclined to bo sore, and will not be seen at her beat oil top of the ground. John Barleycorn is a consistent performer, but lie has a bit more weight than lie has yet won with. Square Deal went all to pieces after winning the Manawatu Cup, and rail last in cach of his starts at llarton, but it is said these poor displays can be accounted for by the fact that his trainer wns too busy with him in the interval. Indigo is surprisingly fresh and well, but his day seems past. Ardenvhor is too unreliable, and if Wishful tries to win from the front-tho light-weights cutting at him tho wholo way may bring about, his defeat. Adjutant seems to bo up liganist better class than he has yet vanquished. The most improved-looking animal in. tho race is Bunting, and he seems certain to go out favourite. Bjorneborg has been racing better of late, but Client seems to be the most dangerous, and lately his form has been very good. Bangitero will be troubled by tho distance, but Kcd Ribbon is nicely weighted. Of the light-weights, Devotion arid Hose Pink should both go well, but tho final part may find their riders uuequal to tho task. Miss De Yal, the top-weight in the lluapehu Handicap, will have tho services of B. Deeley. Sho has been very sore lately, and may not be seen at her best. Sheila, Bst. 61b., has more weight than sho has yet scored with, but she is a good mare. Bairnsdalu may not bo ready yet, as his trainer has been easy with him, and is trying to build him up. Form Up is a smart horse, and he, with Kiljoy, will divide favouritism. Tho latter has n great reputation in the south, and' has woii at her last three starts.. In the Waterloo Stakes, one mile, the champion Desert Gold will only be opposed by her stable companion, Egypt, and Chortle. That there is little wrong with tho mare sho proved yesterday byrunning half a mile on the course proper in 461- seconds. She was accompanied by 'J'ete-a-Tete, who also gave, a good display.
The following will comprise the Telegraph Handicap field:— st. lb. Bimeter (B. Deelev) 9.3 Tete-a-Tete (J. O'Shea) 9 1 Sweet Corn (L. H. Hewiti) 8 13 Oxen hope (F. K Jones) 8 7 Chakwana (A. Keed) 8 3 Multiplication (1!. Eeed) 7 8 Samisen (J. Olacn) 7 g Cease Fire (C. Emerson) 7 6 Lady Black (F. Corlett) 7 2 Greeustreet (G. Clarke) 7 1 Hyginas (D. Eice) 7 0 Kilboyne ( —) 7 0 Tantalus (J. Bryce) 6 7 This race appears to/be the most open event 011 the card, though weight of money will probably make tho locallyowned Chakwana favourite. Bimeter has not done much work here, but Tete-w-Teto's work-out yesterday will gain her plenty of support. Sweet Corn may be troubled by the weight, but Oxenhope is in good heart, and will run well. Chakwana is probably better now than at a-ny tiine' during her career, and looks liko justifying h/ir position in the market. Multiplication may not begin smartly enough, and Samisen will find the company better than she is used to in the South. Cease Fire greatly fancied by her connections. Of the remainder, Lady Black seems to be nicely handicapped, and she alivays races well on this course. Tantalus, from the Chokebore stable, has a great reputation, and is considered by many as likely to show up. The leading jockeys will be seated as follow during the day:— B. Deeley—Tango, Tyne, Eangitero, Goldstream, Cheloma, Miss De Val, and Bimeter.
C. Emerson—Plymouth, Ample, Comely, Glorify, Wishful, Kiljov, and Cease Fire. A. Heed—Probation, Birkenvale, Llanishen, Bunting, Egypt, Form Up, and Chakwana. W. Bell—Crown Imperial II and Prince Laddo. J. Olson—Adjutant, Samisen, Prince Delaware, and Bairnsdale. R. Eeed—Ayali, Bjorneborg, Sheila, and Multiplication. ■ H. s Young—Aero and Client. L. 'Wilson—lndigo and Mazania. A. Oliver—Sleight of Hand, Seadown, John Barleycorn. W. Prico and W. Young are doing tho first day at Trcntham, and are then leaving for the Foxtail Meeting, which takes place on Monday and Tuesday.
