THE TURF
NOTES AND COMMENTS
IBt Glencoe.l Tho weather was perfect for tlio final gallops ut Trenthain, «nd a good crowd was present. The tan aud grass gallops woro open, but tlie former was tho favoured track with trainers.
Generally speaking, the work was disappointing, and apparently the Cup horses had dnno their preparations at home.
Of tho Cup candidates. Rose Pink was tlio first stripped, mid with two different horses she. ran a, mile on tho tun in Iniin. 4-Jscc. Rumania, who was sel; to bring licr home tho last half-mile, was beaten off. 'The Kilbronoy three-year-old looks like being the best of the light-weigh Is in tho Cup. The next to come under observation wero Mascot unci Devotion, who ran the same mile and finished together. Indigo, with tlio good-looking Mazama aa a companion, ran six furlongs, tlio last four in Msec. They finished together, and were not doing their hest. Square Deal accounted for Prince Laddo over ficven furlongs. All e.ves were on Bunting, when ho came out. The instructions wero "a nico mile." He was ridden by A. 'Reed, and carried a good deal more than his Cup weight. Galloping alone, he got to the end of tho milo in lmin. 15soc, fitter cantering the last furlong. Tho first half-mile took Slsec, and that works out entirely satisfactory: Prior to leaving homo ho defeated Indigo over ten furlongs on tho Hastings plouglj, tho time being 2min. llsec. There is no dnubt that he will be a good favourite on the day.
Wishful aud Merry 800 wero given easy work. Amongst the sprinters Oxenhope distinguished himself. With Honesty as a companion he ran five furlongs, the last half-mile- being douo in 49sec, with Honesty beaten off. Ceasefire and Sunny Climes wero associated over five furlong.?. The chestnut maro was going the better at tbe finish. Tho liust half-mile took Msec. ' Thames and Gieenstrect ran four furlongs on the grass. Oliver) ran five furlongs, tho last half-milo taking 51 l-oaec. Sweet Corn 1 ran a half-mile by herself. Cheloma bent Shrill over four furlongs, and did it well. Hyginas, as usual, did a fast, gallop. Ho ran five furlongs in a tick over lmin. lsec. Hymcnestra was sent twice round tho tan, and brushed down the straight. Biplane, alone, ran down tho back half-milo in 4!v;oc. Kxclusivc beat Matilda over half a milo in 4Dsec. Tyno and Lovesick finished in the order named over tho same course in •ISHsec. k Birkenvale comfortably, defeated. Association over half a mile in 49 l-ssee. The Karamu pair, Hyllns and Gladful, 'were given a sound seven furlongs. ■Sloight oE Hand showed to most advantage in a seven furlongs gallop, with Grown Imperial 11, in lniin. 32-Jeec. Form Up and Llanis'hon wcro given six furlongs, and linngitero joined' in behind them. He boat them, and then wont oa for another half-mile, but would not work by himself. Multiplication, Chuckle, ami Vermillion. Biplane is an unlikely starter in the Nursery Handicap, and Dimeter and Panmure may be allowed to forfeit their engagements in the Telegraph Handicap. J. O'Connell, a cross-country jockey, while schooling a horso was thrown and killed, states a Press Association lne&ngo from Melbourne. Joo O'Connell was a wellknown Hastings horseman, mid had been residing in Melbourne for tho past few years He was a brother of Jerry O'Connell, and also of tho late Jack and William, both of whom mot with fatal accidents riding in New Zealand.
