AN IMPORTANT SCHEME

_ Important proposals for tho cxtenBion.of agricultural education have been ' brought forward by tho Minister of Education (Hon. J. A. Hanan). "Tho need of improved provision for education in the Bcicnco and praotice of agriculture has been generally recognised," said tho Minister. "Wo want moro farmers and better farmers, and tho way to secure them is to give facilities for tho instruction of our young people in farming subjects, thus assisting to provide a sound basis for the great primary industries. The first step in this direction is tho creation of a teaching force, and I am attacking tho question from ( that point of view. My proposals aim at tho training of teachers capablo of handing on their own specialised knowledge to ever-wid-ening circles of students." , The scheme has been embodied iu regulations which were placed before tho Executive Council by tho Minister of Education yesterday and approved for.early issue. The Minister proposes to create a system of agricultural bursaries, tenable by students at State experimental farms or approved schools. The bursaries are to be held by qualified nialo students; who will take a courso of agricultural study and prac- " tice. Students will bo required to possess a sound general education, and must be between sixteen and twenty years of age. The .period of instruction, will bo two years, and the annual value will be £20, pins'the amount of tuition fees in the case of approved institutions, and plus a boarding allowance of £30 in the case of students who" require to live away from home. Tho Minister mentioned, in cxplanation, that tho schemo was based upon a recommendation made by the Council of Education. Tho bursaries would he ■ similar to the Home Science Bursaries tenable at tho Otago University, and he. hoped that the outcome would bo .the creation of a valuable body of experts who could be employed by the
