OTAKI SANATORIUM
FOR CONSUMPTIVE SOLDIERS. "The Government has arranged to take over the Otaki Sanitarium for the reception of consumptive cases," said tho Minister of Publio Health (tho Hon. 0. AV. Russell) yesterday. ''The Health Department will make provision at the Bauitorium for civilian patients as well as for soldiers. Control of the sanitorhun is to be vosted in, the Department -until two years from tho date of tho termination of the war. The Otaki Hospital is also to bo vested in the Department, on the understanding that the institution will continue to be available for residents of the district needing general, medical, or surgical treatment.
"Although tho institutions are to bo taken over by tho Health Department, tho rates from the contributing local bodies will still bo payablo to the "Wellington Hospital Board. The board , will pay to the Department the actual cost of maintenance of civilian, patients in oither institution, less tho amount of fees collected. In tho event of the board resuming control of the hospitals at the close of the period.mentioned, the Department is not to make any charge for new buildings that may have been erected during its period of occupation." • The Minister added that the proposals had been approvod by the Wellington Hospital Board, and wuld take effget at once. The Health Department would proceed with the erection of additional shelters for the reception of consumptive soldiers. The Otaki Sanitorium and the. existing Cambridge Sanitorium would provide for the needs of the soldiers in the North Island, and proposals were under consideration for the extension of the sanatoria in the South Island.
