EFFECTS OF PROHIBITION

(To the Editor.) , §ir,—Your correspondent "0.5." 'iias just commenced to study the Prohibition question, and, simple like, asserts that "Prohibition from a temperance viewpoint is only fit for destruction." He would l actually have- us believe that the opening of twenty additional drink shops in Wellington and the surrounding districts would decrease the consumption of beer. How is it that the publicans and New Zealand have not yet woko up to "O.S.'s" idea and (ranged themselves on the side of No-License while the "pros" advocate license? Can you imagine the opening of six hotels in South Wellington causing the consumption of beer to diminish? The supply would diminish. Tell any resident of Kelburn that the consumption of beer is greater in his. district than if there were a couple of pubs, there, and you would be considered a fib- subject for Poiirua. Oiie thing is certain: If the consumption of liquor in New 'Zealand has increased although one-twelfth of the area is"dry," the consumption would havo gone up another twelve per cent, had the whole area been "wet." The splendid results obtained! from partial Prohibition at Home are sufficient to demonstrate that the liquor , evil is a. menace, and from a business "viewpoint is only fit for destruction," and it must be destroyed if our nation is to hold the lead.—l am, etc.. JOHN PLOWMAN'.
