MINERS OP GREYMOUTH By Telegraph—Prees Association. Creymouth, January 15. Tho Military Service Board held its first sitting here to-day. Isaac James, manager of tbo State Colliorios, made an objection on behalf of State mine employees, and it'was resolved to hear tho whole of tho cases this afternoon. Waiter Angel, merchant, applied for an extension of time. Both his brothers wero partners in his business, and had bectt drawn in the ballot. Ho had previously enlisted and been rejected. An extension of timo was granted. The case of Snigger, a State sawmill hand, was adjourned sine die, tho board expressing the opinion that the management should endeavour to release eligible men. Tho appeal of Patrick Heffernan, _a farm hand, and one of seven brothers, none of whom were serving, was dismissed. Other appeals dealt with concerned men unfit within section 35 and over age. The appeals of the railwaymen wero adjourned sine dio. _At the afternoon sitting of tho board tfie cases of the coal miners and truckers who appealed were adjourned sfne die. Stresß was laid on. the point that if tho appellants leave their employment the mine manager will be responsible to the authorities. Tho appeals of sawmillers in extreme cases , wore allowed. Gardner, farmer, of Shannon, Hugh M'Kee, fanner, of Aokautero, and Leslie Morris, farmer, of Newbury, were adjourned until the next sitting of the board. Those of Samuel James. Strachan, farmer, of Apiti, James Burns, jun., fanner, of Kelvin Grove, Edson Newdick, dairy farmer, of WhakaAinga, William Henry Smith, farmer, of Moutoa, George Judd, dairy farmer, of Shannon, were adjourned since die. Three brothers, Charles, Edward, and John Oonlan, farmers, of Oroua Downs, who wero called up under Section. 35, appealed on the grounds of b&ftig permanently unfit. Tho board adjourned the appeal of John Conlan sine die, while the other two brothers were given to February 5 before being called up. Fred. Ofsoki, motor driver, of Palmerston North, appealed on the ground of being under age. Appellant's birth certificate was produced, and the appeal was allowed. Ernest Henry Mallett and Aubrey Mallett, fanners, of Kauranga, who wero called up under Clause 35, applied: for an extonsion of time beforo entering camp. Tho Court granted leave toAubrey until March 5, and. to Ernest lcavo till May 2S. 'Jlie appeal of James M'Mamis, Roman Catholic priest, of Palmerston North, was granted' on the ground of public interest. William John Newdicks, carpenter, oE Palmerston North, lodged 1 an appeal (allowed) on the ground that ho had been declared permanently unfit for service. James and Henry Walker, dairy farmers, of Himatangi, appealed on the ground of public interest, and undue hardship. Tho board dismissed James's appeal, and adjourned Henry's sine die. Tho appeal of Henry Dittmer, farmer, of Linton, whom tho Medical Board reported as permanently unfit, was allowed. The appeal of Herman Dittmer, his brother, was dismissed. Tho appeals of Frank Edlen, flaxhand, of Foxton, and Victor Carroll, shop assistant, of Foxton, wero allowed. William Francis Carroll and Francis Joseph Carroll, farmers, of Glen Oroua, were t granted exemption until February 5. •Vincent Carroll's appeal was ' adjourned till the next sitting of the board.
