At tliis week's annual meeting of tlie Lyttelton Harbour Board, ths> engineer reported as follows;— During tho Siirly portion of the period from November 30 to January 5, tho dredgo Canterbury was chiefly engaged in deopening -and •widening the outer channel, also in deepening the open parts of tho inner harbour. Tho dredgo Tewha-ka -was engaged in deepening operations at' No. 2 jetty W., and between No. 5 and No. 6 jetties. Owing to a further subsidence of the wall and staging in tho soft ground near Baker's Point at tho same 6pot "which had given trouble previously, tlpping-ivas commenced with this objcct of carrying tho finished mole across this portion, and good progress ivas being made. AH the mooring piles for No. 6 jetty had been driven for a distanco of 630 feet from the back or the breastwork, and fenders were fitted for 500 feet, from tho same point. Tho upper deck was completed for a- length of 550 feet, GISBORNE HARBOUR. Tho silt, question, which has always more or less distinguished tho Gisborno Harbour in a shipping sense, is just now severely exercising tho minds of the members of the HaTbour Board at tho northern port. Various schemes for getting fid of tho silt have been put forward, and for some time a bucket dredgo has been employed, but though a channel has been dredged for somo distance up, It was filled up again before any relief -was given to shinpin!?. Tho Harbour Board has • secured reports .on tho question from tho engineer (Mr. M'Donald) and Mr. Ferguson, of Wellington, but nothing definite has so far eventuated. In his report Mr. M'Donald stated:—"l have satisfied myself that the silt in this river can be effectively and economically dealt with by pumping, and if mimpcd over the side of tho. dredger on the ebb tide -will bo carried out to sea. I may sny that there is nothing in the nature of an experiment in tho above proposal, hut that it is tho most efficient and economical way to faco the silt question in this harbour." As illustrating the seriousness of the position tho chairman of the Harbour Board (Jtr. J. Towuloy) recently pointed out that the rainfall last year in Gisborno was the heaviest on l'ccoi'd, totalling 66.19 inches, against an average for the previous 28 years of 46.36 inches. Tho floods and freshes in the river last year had been exceptional. In May floods extended over May 11, 12, and 13. Thoro was a fresh on May 15, and a further frc6h on "
May 26. On Juno 1 <t fresh occurred, and on August 3 thero was a flood "which silted tho cntranco channel up. On August 14 thoro was a flood that brought tho minimum dopth in tho cntranco channel up to 4ft. 6in. belo"\V Admiralty low water. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. J. W. Crotty, mato of tho Hifwera. has come ashore, and has been roplaeod by Mr. A. M'Klnnon. Mr. S. Thom, mato of tho Kapani, lias come ashore. Mr. T. 0. Barber has joined tho Kovhai as first officer in succession to Ml'. W. S. Hyslop, who has gone south for orders. Mr. Hughan. chief officer of the ivomata, lias come ' ashore temporarily;' and lias been replaced by.Mr. T. Bowling. Tho Union Company advises that tho Manuka, which left Sydney at noon on Thursday for Wellington direct, has 118 saloon and 63 steerage passengers, besides 1298 tons of cargo, for Wellington. Sho should get here early on Monday morning, and will leavo at 5 p.m. on Tuesday for Lyttelton. ! Many Homoward-bound steamers nowadays liavo their, names blacked over'and distinguishing marks removed from their funnels (remarks tho Calcutta, "Englishman"). On the othfr hand, some noutral vessels aro more conspicuous than ever. For example, tho Swedish and Norwegian steamers now in Calcutta not only havo very attractive funnels _ and rainbowcoloured stripes down their bows, but tho ship's namo and nationality are naintWr along the sides in letters a yard high. Our vessels may now ovado tho Sun by night, but the latter cannot miss a Norwegian by day. The Ngakuta left hero for Picton last ovoning, and from there goes on to Oneliunga with a full load of sheep. From Onehunga sho goos on to Greymouth, and is timed to load a cargo of coal at that port for Wellington on January 19. She is due here on January 21. Tho Ngahero leaves here for Greymouth to-night to load coal for Wellington. The Koromiko is at present loading a full cargo at Lyttoltou for Sydney, to which port she will proceed via Timaru and Dunedin. Messrs. Dalgety and Company now advise that tho Orepuki is expected at Wei-, lington on Tuesday next from Lyttelton, and will sail tho samo day for Nelson and Terakohe. , \ The Kaiapoi, which arrived In port on Thursday from Australia, via soutn. is apparently to remain on the coast as ghe proceeds to Westport direct at 5 p.m. to-day. Tho Komata left Westport early yesterday morning with a cargo of coal for Wellington. . • • • Tho Oorinna is duo here on Tuesfiay from southern ports, and sails tho samo day at 2 p.m. for New Plymouth, for which port she recoives cargo until noon on ■
