FRANCE'S SACRED SOIL
, PROPOSED PRESERVATION OF THE BATTLE FRONT. At the close of the war the entire lino of trenches in France, extending from Alsace to tho Belgian border, may (writes Mr. Henry Wood, tho United Press correspondent with the French armies) be converted into a sort of national sacred forest as a permanent tribute to tho memory of tho French "poilus" who died there defending their national soil. A proposition to this effect has just been prepared by the General Council of tho Department of the Meuso, and will soon bo submitted to tup French Government. Should this plan be finally accepted, future generations, not only of France, Bufc of tho entire World, would always have tho opportunity of visiting the lino of trenches, over 600 kilometres <n length, on_ which, the French threw back the tido of German invasion at the Battlo of the Marno, and which till the end of tho war will always remain the basis of France's military effort to rid her soil entirely of tho enemy.
