BOWLING CARNIVAL

PROPITIOUS WEATHER FOR LADIES' DAY CHAMPION PAIRS AND SINGLES ! HALDANE AND INGRAM LEFT IN SINGLES 8 ' •'■' . a After thp refroshing showers of e Tuesday, both , the weather and tho |] greens wore all that could bo desired ~ yesterday, when the champiouship " pairs- 'and' singles were advanced to O stages approaching completion. Naturt, ally, after Tuesday's soaking rains tho K greens were a littlo stiff, and more i. muscle was called into play to get the '• bowls up, but the Wellington green ■• (where most games were played 8 yesterday) played vdffr perfect truth and uniformly excellent.play resulted. It was originally arranged that a match should be played between North and South Island rinks, but that fixture had to be abandoned owing to the tournament arrangements being* upset t by ; the rain oil Tuesday. This left the upper green for the pairs and the lower green for tho singles, and the keenest interest was manifested by a "full bank" in each and all of tho games played. An Interlude. At 4.45 p.m. thero was a break in the play, when Mr. J. A. Nash (Mayor of Palmerston North), on behalf of the bowlers concerned in tho tournament, took his stand upon the stairway of the pavilion and announced that he had been requested to say a few words of thanks to the president of the association (Colonel E.. J. Collins), Mrs. Collins, and tho local executive. They • had all looked forward to coming to * Wellington with very great pleasure, as they know they were sure of a i. right royal time, and they wore all glad to se6 the genial smiling face of their president. They all knew what hospitality meant in Wellington, and that pleasures was increased when they knew that the headquarters of the , tournament was to be at the Wellingt ton Club, which ho thought he could say was the finest in the Australasian ! colonies, a club as renowned for its hospitality as it was for the good players it produced. (Applause.) This tournament, in spite of the rain, had been a great success, and when the timo camo for them to take their departure he thought it would bo held that the Wellington tournament had eclipsed all previous tournaments. But what would the tournament be without their secretary, Mr. J. J. Eoberts? (Applause.) He was of opinion that the time had arrived when the centres should agree to have a permanent secretary appointed; he did not care where from, but ; it should be done. (Applause.) He also expressed thanks to the ladies who had so kindly waited on thein every afternoon, and also to the caretakers of greens. On behalf of th.6 bowlers he returned his best thanks to Colonel and Mrs. Collins, and wished them long life and happiness. Thereupon the crowd sang "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow," cheers werp given for Mrs. Collins and Mr. Eoberts, and tho National Anthem was sung. In reply, the president thanked Mr. Nash for bis very kind remarks. It had been a great function in point of numbers, and if they had all enjoyed themselves that was his pleasure. Hβ. only-had one reerot, and that was that he was not witli them as n. bowler, as lie felt an odd man out. He hoped they had all enjoyed themselves and would carry away many pleasant memories of the tournament. He reminded those present of the electric light tournament that is to take place on Friday and Saturday evenings of this week, when a concert, arranged bv Bowler (."Teddy") Hill, and the Trentham Camp Band would be in attendance. The ground held about 2500 that afternoon, but lie hoped to seo doublp.that number present on Friday and Satur- ' day evenings, and that instead of having £500 they woujd have £1000 to hand over to_ a patriotic fund. The function concluded with three hearty cheers for the boys at the front. RESULTS Yesterday's results were as follow:— CHAMPION SINGLES. A SECTION (AT TE HIWI). First Hound.
