NOTES AND COMMENTS

JBy Glincoe.T . Acceptances for first day events at the Wellington Racing Club's Meeting- fall due on Friday next. . ■ While in the south, 1". D. Jones had the two-year-old filly Kilmedy,' by Kilbroney—Ena, placed under his care by Mr. J. B. Reid. She is a si,stor to KilIcna, and looks a very promising sort. Galloping jockeys are now taking a •prominent part in tho saddle and sulky, as at tho Auckland Meeting A. Julian drove tho winner of tho Auckland Cup on .the opening day, nhilo on. the concluding day ho rotlo Princo Rufus. In each ca6o tho dividond was very - substantial. B. Deeley saluted the judge for the first time in tho light-harness sport when ho rodo St. Trolla to victory in tho Telegraph Handicap on Saturday. Bee has been working rather short lately on tho tracks, and it may be decided to ease her up instead of • Bonding the JJiii'tiam mare to Tron.tham this month. • Word is to hand from Grcymouth that Recorder, who was purchased some weeks ago by Mr. H. Cassidy with a view to <-ontes'ting the • Hokitika Jubilee 'Gold Cup, has gone amiss. Mr. Cassidy has now acquired the Achilles mare Martial ■•\ir, and sho raced in his interests at the Hokitika Meeting. The tracks at Trenthani received a eood soaking as the result of the "heavy rain which fell on Monday night, and in conseffuonce the going is now much improved. While contesting tho Summer Cup.at Ellerslie, Maro Antony-tore-off a shoe,

aud as ho is still lame he is a donbtful starter in tho Wellington Cup'l'ho Achilles uinro Ally changed hands yestordny. Her now owner is a wellknown business man in Wellington, and tho mare will go into W. Garrett's stables at Opnki. A Melbourne writer snys:—"The Daylight Saving Bill is not viewed with favour, by trainers. Instead of them getting to work with their teams at half-past 5 under the old system, it was a quar- , ter past (i when thoy begnn to put in J an appearance on Tuesday morning. As tho days pass they will arrive later each ' morning, until, on February 28, tho sun L will not rise till fhreo minutes past 7, . lvhich will mean that trainers will not finish thoir morning's work until 10 o'clock." ; When Balnrahg won the Carringlon Stakes at Randwick, he created a fresh Australian record for the distance by ; running the six furlongs in lmin. lljsec. I Ho was ridden by F. Foley, who won the Melbourne Cup on Sasanof. Tho. Porirna team for the Wellington ; Meeting will consist of Crowhurst, Goldstream,, Tango, Kukri, Rockbound, and Sabann. They will be railed across on I Monday. While Mr. John M'Donald was at Auckland for tho Cup Mooting, one of ! the woll-known breeder's racers in Lady ! Isolt (Mountain King—lsolt) was winning ■ tho Chelmsford Handicap at tho Tattersail's Randwick Meeting. Limpet ■• (Varco—Savannah), who used to be in the Porirua stables, but was 1 purchased by Mr. J. J. Corry, of Blenheim, and sont to Sydney, was a runner in the Carrington Stakes, but sho was not : supported. R-angitero, who showed good form over short courses during the holiday meetings, is engaged in the Wellington Cup . and Telegraph Handicap, run on tho opening day at Trentham. It is understood that his owner is desirous of seeing how he will shape in a long race, ; and on that account ho. will be allowed 1 to take his place in the Cup field. • A Sydney w.riter says: "In New Zealand the idea obtains that if stipendiary stewards oftener viewed racing from other parts of tho course than, one of the 6tands it would have a beneficial effect upon riders. The same thing applies with equal force in Australia, as w;hen'a field is large it is almost impossible for the stewards to take in what is happening at the back of a course. For instance, at Randwick it is possible for. one rider to be edging another out without such an occurrence being discernible from the stands. And when this ! happens''a complaint hon\ the rider who ■has suffered is rare indeed—ho simply retaliates in kind on some future occasion." Sea Pink did not win a race for Mr. E. J. Watt out of sixteen starts last season, and when he won the hnndieap at Moonee Valley on New Year's Day it was his first success this senson, so. the Seaton Delayal gelding cannot be said to have won out of his turn. Imported .horses continue to carry ail before them in Australia. At Randwick on New Year's Day, Chantemerlo (Polym'elus—Amphoraria) won Tattersall's Cup, one mile and a half, in 2min. 32} sec, which is a record for the race- The winner is evidently high class,, as he won by the proverbial street. At Tattersall's Meeting held at Randwick on New Year's Day, the Novice Handicap was won by the Waikanae-bred Watta (Achilles—Stepina), who started one of the outsiders of the field. Watta is owned by the Queensland sportsman, Mr. A. B. Nngel, who gave 010 guineas for hiin as a yearling. The Taranaki Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting will be held on the New Plymouth Racecourse on February 7 and 8 next. This club is giving an excellent programme to horse-owners, and it should receive a liberal response from them by ] way of support. The Taranaki Cup, which is run on the first day, is worth 550 soys (a cup value 50 sovs. and 500 sovs. in specie). The distance is one 'mile and a quarter. On tho second day the.Paul Memorial Handicap, nine fur. longs, of 250 sovs., will be run. Good stakes are also given, for the remaining races on the programme. Nominations for .all events close with tho secretary, Mr. E..P. Webster, Box 33, New Plymouth, on Friday next, at 9 p.m.
