TVAIMABINO AT AUCKLAND. The steamer Vfaimarino, -which arrived at Auckland from San Francisco on Friday; had. two narrow escapes since- she left Now Zealand, reports tho Auckland "Herald. , On tho voyage from tho Bominion to Vancouver the vesel loaded 600 tons of copra at tho Islands. While discharging other oargo at Vancouver the copra in ■ No. 4 hold caught (Ire. Immediately two leads of the ship's fire hose wero playing on the flames, and the alarm was sent to the local brigades, which dispatched motor-engines. It was not before 14 leads of hose had been playing into the hold and the- lower hold lind been flooded that the firo was subdued. By that time 400 tons of copra had been burned. After tho Dro motor-engines were lowered on to platforms in the 'tween decks, to pump the water out of the hold. The hull did not suffer, and the veEsel was allowed to sail after additional sopports under the 'tween decks hnd been erected. It was fortunate that the other cargo in the hold was chrome ore, and thus escaped damage. When goinr along tho .Oroffon coast on the run to San Francisco, tho weather, which had hcen moderate, suddenly changed to a hurricane. The barometer fell to 28.88, and terrific .squalls, ftccompanied by vory heavy rain, broke over the ship. Tho sea was running high and breaking constantly on deck. One sea which broke on board lifted the forepart of the bridge deck, bending a heavy piece of angle iron, whioh was afterwards straightened in Ban Francisco, and riveted down again. Tho sea smashed a ventilator iovel with the deck, nnd the water flooded No. 2 'tween decks, damaging the cargo stowed there. The cargo, which consisted of salmon, eto., had to ho discharged in San Francisco.
The Tarawera left Wellington for Aiicklandi via, Napier and Gisborne, last evening In all probability there will Ml be another boat for tlioso ports until the llonowa-i on January 18.

WIMMERA LEAVES MELBOURNE. Tho Huddavt, Parker Company advises that the Wlnimora left Melbourne at 1 p.m. last Saturday with 760 tons of cargo and 137 passengers, and that she is duo here early on Thursday. She sails on Saturday for southern ports and Melbourne, and finally leaves Bluff for Melbourne direct on Thursday, January 18. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. A. Invcrarity has signed on tho Maori as second engineer. Air. C. V. Richardson has joined tho Tarawcra as purser. Mr. T. H'Con villa, has joined the Tarawera, as third engineer. Mr. C. Oroucher, mate of the Himitangi, has signed off, and has , been replaced by Mv. W. Deilly. Mr. C. B. Barber, third engineer of the Connna, has come ashore.
The Komata will sail at noon to-morrow for Westport to load baok to Wellington. The Poherua leaves Wellington at noon to-day for Wellington, and thenco goea. south.
It is hoped to got the Kini away at noon to-day for Greymouth. An attempt will be made to get the Kittawa away for Westport to-day. From Westport she goes to Dunedin. The- Tβ Aniiu left Wellington for Weetport at 5 o'clock last evening. At Westport she loads for Dunedin. The Kamo will sail at midnight to-night for Pioton and Onehunga, taking cargo. Tho schoonel Huanui arrived at Auckland on Saturday morning from Raretonga, with a cargo of copra. It is some years since the sailer has viaited New Zealand, as she has been engaged in the Island trade. The Huanui belongs to Messrs. Jagger and Harvey, She, is a wooden schooner of 139 tons register, built in 1910. The run from Rarotonga took 20 days. Captain Stonback/ is in charge of the liottt. and he has under him a crew of six.
