BOWLING CARNIVAL

AN AUSPICIOUS START SECTION PLAY IN CHAMPION PAIRS In brilliant weather, under cloudless skies, tie annual tournament of tlio dominion of Now Zealand Bowling Association commenced on tho city ..and suburban greons promptly at 9 a.m. ■ Yesterday. The tournament was officially opened by tho presidont, Colonel R. J. Collins, C.M.G., at the Wellington Club's green; , in the presence- of all the bowlors concerned in the games ■to be played on that club's green. In ' declaring the tournament open, Colonel Collins said: —"It is my privilogo and pleasure'aspresident of tho association to extend to you a very hearty, welcome! and' to wish you ■ a pleasant time. Everything points.to tlie meeting being in every way a great success. iWe have a record' entry in every class, > l and if we get good weather this tournament should, stand out as the best ever held in New Zealand. Tho entries ■ : -which uu'mbor 136 links; 208 pairs and • 7-210 singles, are unique, when compared troth previous Weiling;'ton already holds tho record with 100 "rinks in 1910,'. but the entries for the present tournament eclipso all. It, speaks well for the popularity of Wellington as tho bowling centre of .New i'Zealand. Evidently Wellington is tho ■ i Mecca for which all howlers inako when a tournament is held hero,.as in tho past a Wellington tournament has al- ■ ways been well attended. Wo have ibowlers from tho North Capo to the Bluff, the North' Island supplying 102 rinks and the South Island 34. Tho distance between the extremes is no doubt responsible for this. These | • gatherings do much, not only to create a keener interest in tho.good old game, but they tend to intensify the good feeling among clubs which I. am sure 1 you-all so much desire. \ Bowlers renew old acquaintances and:. make now friends. They come together and talk over old times, and I hopo. that members .will carry, back with them many pleasant recollections of- their visit'to Wellington. I desire to. congratulate bowlers on .the great strides made dur-, ing tie past year. Our numbers have been considerably increased, and , we .have now close on 12.000 , members participating , in the friendly and social, game of bowls. In . keeping with the war period we are. holding do entertainment other than that given ;by, the president on Wednesday afternoon, aud the electric light tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, which is being given in aid "of tho patriotic if unds.. (Applause.) When we met last year at Chrietchurch we had hoped that the war which was upsetting civilisation, and caueing such havoc throughout the world would have ere this been over, and that the Allies' efforts to crush the enemy would have been crowned with success. Un- ' fortunately our hopes have not yet been realised. As individuals, we mourn the loss of friends, and those who have lost .near relatives have the bowlers' deepest sympathy. ' Our pride and admiration are called forth by the magnificent work done by New Zealanders at the front. Their efforts have won for them the highest commendations, not only from our owu officers, but from the officers of ; other nations." (Applause.) Three cheers were then given for the president, on the call d Mr.., J. A.Nash, and straightway a_ start was zaado with the pairs championship. FIRST DAY'S RESULTS '.
