Under the general heading of business premises in- the city (strictly other than dwellings) are included 11 business premises proper, a church, two picture theatres, and an orphanage. Permits were issued for two new pieturo houses, for alterations to and for alterations to another building which was converted into a theatre. Another theatre was completed during the year. Among the principal works for which permits were issued during the year wore the following:—Factory, /Dixon Street*for L. and J. W. Blake;' alterations, Willis Street, Shortt's Theatre; alterations, Riddiford Street, Our Theatre; store, Hutt Road. A. S. Paterson and Co.; warehouse, Inglewood Place, Clarkson and Company; private hotel, Plimmer's Avenue, Plinimer's Steps Co.; church and schoolroom, Lome Street and Cambridge Terrace, Congregational Church; additional story,. Tborndon Quay, .Abraham and Williams; picture theatre, Courtenay Place, J. J. Williamson; school, Wadestown, Education Board; additions, Willeston Street, Ross and Glendining; cheese store. Waterloo Qnay, Harbour Board; dwelling, Bowen Street, A. H. Turnbull; workshop, Home Street, Doyle Bros.; orphanage, Morton Street, Presbyterian Church.Trustees; picture theatre, Cuba Street, Queen's Theatre, Company. In addition, work has been in progress on a number of buildings for which the permits were issued prior to last year, and which are, therefore, not included in the total. Among these ae the police stations in Taranaki Street and Johnston Street, tho Midland Hotel on Lambton Quay, the Crown Theatre, A. E. Preston's cool store in Taranaki Street, the big addition to the Government Printing Office, and the tramway sheds at Lyall Bay. In Wadestown there has been almost Jour times as much money spent, or proposed to-, bo snent, in Northland a great incrpase, and in 3lelroso (which includes Kelhurn) an increase of nbont £30,000. There has been a small decrease in tho city. t
