EXHIBITION OF ANZAC PICTURES
Of Gallipoli, pen pictures, even photographs, can give only a vague idea of tho country. Just when the brilliant correspondent, tie official chronicler and manipulator of tho camera fail, tlio soldieiwirtist, Sapper Moore-Jones stepped in and gavo to tho world the actual colouring, tho actual atmosphere of Anzac. All fhis and more may bo said of the famous collection of water colour sketches made at Anzac by Sapper Moore-Jones, the well-known Auckland artist, who, while serving with the New Zealand Engineers in Gallipoli, was attached to the Army Corps Headquarters as artist, and who prepared for General Birdwood sketches of the enemy positions, a taak as dangerous as it was difficult. Theso sketches are invaluable records of a never-to-be-forgotten expedition. With the object of illustrating to those at Home and Kew Zealand what owr boys had to face, Sapper MooreJones announces an exhibition of his famous collection of pictures in Wellington, suitable promises having been secured in Caledonian Chambers, 33 Willis Street, abovo Hart and Co., where the exhibition will bo opened on Wednesday next. While tho exhibition remains open Sapper Moore-Jones will deliver at stated intervals descriptive lectures. Enlisting in England at tho outbreak of war, this soldier-artist took part in the memorable landing on tho Peninsula on April 25, 1915, and for eight months ho was continually undor fire while making his sketches. Invalided homo, a long spell in hospital followed, but when on tho mend he completed his pictures, and by instructions from the military authorities and by arrangement with tho Now Zealand High Commissioner, ho exhibited his collection at tho New Zealand Government offices in the Strand, and all London flocked to see them. Sapper Moore-Jones had the honour of having his pictures hung by Ttoyal command at Buckingham Palace for i-rvvato inspection of the King, to whom the Sapper explained tho difficulties our boys had to contend wth.
