THE DROUGHT
Reports from the Tokomairiro district states that tho dry_ weather is .! likely to havo a very serious effect on the cereal and turnip crops. Iu somo instances water is so scarce that it has t:> be carted to the sheep. It is prob-. lomatieal whether, if rain should fall mow, it would havo any effect in improving tho oat and wheat crops, which are light and poorly filled. The whole of tho hillsides round the j>lain bears 8 parched and burnt-tip appearance. ■The "glass" fell on Tuesday, and faroi-•'..,'-ors looked forward hopefully to a downi pour, hut it did not materialise. Reports from further south also go to show that rain is badly wanted. Toko- . mairiro farmers, have, however, not gone in so much this year for cropping, in view of the probable shortage of labour. In common with the. ex•periencc of most industries, the farmers now havo to pay more lor labour.
