MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M.> presided over a sitting of the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning. On his third conviction for insobriety within .the space of six montfis, William Lynch was fined £3, with the alternative of 14 days' imprisonment. 'James Baldwin, deemed by tho police to be an incorrigible rogue, pleaded guilty to a charge of escaping, on August *3, 1916, from Mount Cook Prison, where ho was undergoing three 'years' reformative treatment for breaking, entering, and theft. Inspector Hendrey stated that though tho accused was a young man he had an exceedingly bad record. His Worship imposed the maximum penalty—two years' reformative treatment, to commence at the end of tho term which the accused is at present undergoing. John Edward Ulonquist, alias Blauquist, alias Skate, pleaded guilty to a charge of being a rogue and a vagabond, with insufficient lawful means of support. He had been previously convicted of being idle and disorderly. A sentence of one year's hard labour, with two years' reformative treatment to follow," was inflicted. Udefonso Hermosilla. a Chilian, and a prohibited immigrant, was remanded till to-dav on a charge of unlawfully landing in New Zealand. He was stated to be a member of the crew of the Kia Ora, and uniiblo to speak English. ■
