ANNUAL MEETING OF N.Z.E.I. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Educational Institute was continued yesterday, the third day o! sitting.

The first business was the consideration of the report of the executive. It was discussed in committee, and was adopted in open meeting without remark.

Bearing on the report, Mr. Combs (Mastorton) submitted the following resolution:—"That in the opinion of this conference the existing resources of tho institute aro quite inadequate to cope with tho existing pressing need for odu r , cational reform, and that a satisfactory executive report will not bo presented till such resources are. increased, and a paid secretary appointed." Mr. Combs advocated vorv strongly the anpointment of a paid secretary, and the raising of the. subscription to provide funds. Without these things he considered that the proceedings of the conference must inevitably be of no effect.

Mr. L. F. de Berry moved an amendment to delete tho words "a satisfactory executive roiwrt will- not be presented till such resources aro increased and." The amendment was carried. Mr. Abel (Otago'i moved the followin„.._'"That the N.Z.E.I. is of the opinion that the grading scheme, subject to adjustment, and tho removal of inconsistencies, will find accentanco as a promotion scheme if applied as four separate schemes within +he boundaries of tho four university districts."

This last section of the motion proposing the four areas found no favour, nnd an amendment submitted by Mr. Parkinson to.delete nil words after "if applied . . . university districts," was 1 agreed to without anv debate.

The election of officers resulted ns follows:—President.' Mr. L. F. de Berrv. M.A. (Hokitika); vice-nresident, Mr.'A. N. Burns, M.A. iWollii>«ton); secretory.. Mr. H. A'.
