SOUTH OTAGO APPEALS
MEN CALLED FOR HOME SERVICE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Duneriin, January 5. A sitting of I .the Military ServiceBoard was held at Balclutha to-day. Robert Hastings, farmer, appealed on the ground of undue hardship. Captain Free said that men passed as tit for home sendee had not been called up, and might never be. The chairman said that as regards mon passed for homo service the board proposed to adjourn the cases until some system of home service had been brought into operation. All these cases would be adjourned sine die. William Langmuir and John Langmuir, dairy farmers, appealed on tho ground of public interest. John had lieen passed as fit and William as unfit. The appeal of John was dismissed, while that of William was adjourned sine die.
William Reid and Georgo Rcid, en-gine-driver and farmer respectively, produced medical certificates of unfitness. Both'appeals were allowed. Alfred Dabinett, farm labourer, and Charles Dabinett, farm overseer, also appealed. Alfred produced a certificate of medical unfitness. Tho hoard allowed the appeal. Charles is to take his chance of the ballot. Thomas Dale, farmer, and Frederick Dale, farmer,, appealed on the ground of undue hardship. They had three brothers in camp. The.chairman, said that in a case where thrco brothers in ono family had' enlisted some consideration should bo allowed, and both, sliould take their chance at the ballot. Both appeals were allowed.
Thomas Roberts, dairy fanner, appealed on tho ground of undue. hardship. The case was adjourned to permit of medical examination.
James Lawrenco and David Lawrence, farmers, appealed on the ground of undue hardship, having u mother and sister to support. Both wore passed for home' service, and the cases were adjourned until a system of home service is inaugurated. Alfred' Hastings, farmer, produced a certificate of medical unfitness. The appeal was formally dismissed.
John Paisley, farmer, appealed on the ground of undue hardship. His 1 ejdost brother was killed at Gallipoli, and one brother was wounded in France, and another is on active service. Tlio chairman said that in view of the family's good military record the board had decided to grand conditional exemption, provided appellant remained in his present occupation. Peter Dippie, farmer, appealed on 'tlio ground' of unduo hardship. The caso was adjourned sine die, provided appellant remained in the same occupation. Arthur Twaddle and Jolm Twaddle,, farmers, .appealed on tho ground that tho latter brother was not in the first division, and that tho former should not come under Section 35. The hoard decided to allow the appeal of _ John on tho ground that he is not in tho first division. They did not propose to deal with the other appellant, who did not oomo within Section 35.

William Forrester, brakeman in a, coal mine, appealed on the, ground of public interest. William Carson, employer, also appealed on Forrester's behalf. This appeal and that of Frederick Williams, miner, both pronounced unfit, was adjourned! sine die. • Henry West, coal miner, appealed on tho ground of public interest. Tho ease was adjourned sine, die, conditional upon appellant remaining in tho same occupation, and also conditional upon appollant working every working day. n
