By Telegraph—Press Association; ' Hamilton, January 5, A terrific firo is at present raging -6t Hamilton, tho whole factory and timber yards of Ellis and - Burnand being ablaze. The conflagration-' started at _fivo o'clock, and is supposed to have originated in the engine-room. Within ton minutes the factory was, a seething mass of flamoj arid as a strong wind 'vats blowing, tongues; of flame lapped ■ across the.- intervening-road,- and took -hold of large, stack's of dried timber, which were quickly enveloped in a sea of fire. The prcmisos and yards occupy about eight'acres, and at the time of telegraphing tho occupants of dwellings nearby are removing their furniture, while efforts aro being made to -save the large bulk Store of tho Isow Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency
Co. - The-' yard, which adjoins the -factory, has been' completely demolished, the only thing '■ standing being the strong-room, with/the books intact. The'most serious feature is the destruction of largo stocks of butter-box timber, which requires to lie.of special quality and. thoroughly seasoned. As Ellis and-Burnand aro tho biggest but-ter-box manufacturers in the North Island, many factories are likely to suffer in consequence, though the firm is sending down a special staff of workmen to their King Country mills to endeavour to fulfil orders. Tliere was a good deal of manufactured joinery on the premises, and at the last assessment tho stock was valued at £25,000. The stock and, premises wero insured for about £10,000. ■maiiily / in the Commercial Union Office.
