h NOTES AND COMMENTS p
... p Acceptances for the first day's liandi- " raps at the Wellington meeting are due on I'riday of next week. p Secretary A. li. AVhytc, of the Welling- Ci ton E.C., who has been to the West h Coast on a holiday jaunt, returned home J yesterday. , o: Entries for nil events at the Egmont tl meeting close on Monday next. b A. Oliver went into camp this week, r but W. Bell, who is to do home service, »; has been given leave till Easter. J Mr. W. G. Stead's horses. SasannJ and s Co., have reached Trentham, and will '^ rciuuiii here until after the Cup meetins. 'l'he Melbourne Cup winner looks on _ the light side, and will be improved by a spell. A. yearling, by Elyaiau from Lady Gwen, dam oj Lady Pnuit.v, accompanied ei .). W. Lowe's team back from Ellerslie. t| Ho is a nice cut of » youngster, and y should make a galloper. 0 j Tlib loeal horseman, A, Reed, who is V retained by the Messrs. Biddiford, has
accepted a second retainer to ride for Mr. E. J. .Watt. It is common report that Mr. E. -J. Watt was greatly disappointed with tlio showings of Blackall at Auckland, and it will be no surprise if the five-year-old gelding is allowed to go but of T. Quinlivan's stables. Included amongst the visitors at the Auckland nicetinj was tho well-known New South Wales breeder, Jfr. JaS. Macdonald, of the Mungie Bondie stud, where Reputation is now located. At Auckland this week the chestnut colt Royal Rufus, who has done sonic racinjr on the other side, was sold to Mr. J. Gallagher, of Pneron, for 50 guineas. At the same sale Prince Soult changed haiv/s for 70 guineas, the buyer being Mr. M. Deeblo, of Thames. The following is a list of the principal winning owner." at the Auckland meeting :-Mr. G. L. Ktead, .£2520; Mr. B. Barlow, JH9OO; Mr. W. G. Steaii. £17.10;. Mr. <L Alexander, .ClfinO; Mr. R. Funnoil, £1585; Mr. T. H. T.owry, £1300; Mr. G. D. Greenwood, £1045. The Chokeboro horses, Adjutant and Battle Eve, who won the two open races on the second day of the Oahiaru meeting, nut; up a similar performance at Trentham on tho second day of the I autumn meeting. Depredation, winner of the Auckland Cup, only cost his owner, R. Barlow. 100 guineas, so that he can lie regarded as a.- great bargain. "Depredation is onlv a little fellow, but he can srallop fast, and is. a good sticker in a finish: . Returned, sportsmen who were present at Ellerslio state that there were som* very vexatious delays at the barrier, amiin several instances tho time of starting the next race had to be postponed. In the Railway Handicap in particular the horses w»m at the post for a very long time. The question of unruly horses at the barrier is one that needs serious consideration. It is quit" unfair to owners of horses who have big weights that thev should be kept at the no- 5 * fol ' twe'ntv and thirty minutes generally bee.auso* one animal is playing np and breaking through the tapes. The irony of the whole business' is that tho horses that play up generally manage fo get tho best'of matters when the tapes are released. Mr. T. M. Wilford, although ho did not have a horse running at the meeting, shared in the stake money at Auckland, to the extent of £100, as breeder of tho Derby winner Sasanof. C. Emerson, who rodo four winners at Hie Auckland meeting, returned south on Wednesday evening, and. will bo riding at the Westlnnd meeting on Monday and Tuesday next. Ho will be up on Slogan, Partisan, Kiljoy, Tyson, ami Lady Middlcton. The bay gelding Kazan, who scored in the Summer Handicap at the Southland meeting, is by Vascn from Tsaritza. He is owned by Mr. K. Chisholm, who 13 at present in camp at Trentham. Seddel-Bahr, a cast-off from tho Higl'den stables, won the concluding event on each day of the Southland meeting. His successes credited Mr. H. Eriedlander with 310 sovs., so ho is now a cheap horse.
