INSTITUTE OF SURVEYORS

ANNUAL MEETING. Tho annual meeting of tho Now Zealand Institute of Surveyors was held yesterday in tho Dominion Museum Library. Present; Messrs. T. Humphries (president), H. Sladdcu, J. M'Kcrrow, E. W. Seaton, C. W. Adams, j. M. Morico (Wellington), P. Chambers and A. 11. Bridgo (Auckland),. I<\ I. Led'eor and J. G. Littlojohn (Nelson), L. W. Freeman, C. H. Bridge, A. D. Dobson (Christchurch). Tho annual report of tho council mentioned that the institute had 262 members Tho roll of those 011 active service showed that 31 licensed surveyors and 58 cadets liad enlisted, of whom at. least eight had lost their lives, while many had been wounded. Sergeant W. M. Gray, a member of tho institute, had been killed in ono of tho Suez Canal engagements. A letter 'had been sent during tho year to tho Minister of Defene drawing 'his attention to a, letter published ill tho institute's "Journal" strongly advocating tho claims of licensed surveyors for commissions, especially in engineering corps, and pointing out tho fitness of men trained professionally in surveying and_ engineering for commissions. 'lie Minister, in reply, stated that ho had sent the letter and '-'Journal" to> the General Officer Commanding, and would discuss tho matter with him. Frequent complaints having been made, principally from tho Auckland province, of tho steady empiojment of unlicensed men. on survey work, a deputation had waited upon tho Survoyor-General on the matter. It was confidently expected that good would result from the representations made. A proposal had been mooted during tho year that a federation should bo brought about between tho Now Zealand and the Australian. Institutes. Tho council felt that tho time was not opportune, pointing out that there wna at present reci- 1 procity in -the matter of examinations, and that possibly more good would result from tho soparato activities of tho several institutes than from ono body alone.

. Tho president, in moving the adopI i-Utfi of tlio roport, urged members to show increased interest in tho work of the institute. The questions of professional status and esprit de corps as botwocn members were involved, and he would like to seo increased activity 011 tho part of tho branches.

Thb report was adopted, and tho following officers woro elected for tho ensuing year:—President, Mr. 0. Hastings Bridgo (Christchurch) ; vice-presi-(lenfc,- Mr. Preston Chambers (Auckland) ; council, Messrs. A. H. Bridge (Auckland), T. Humphries (Wellington), and L. 0. Sladdeu (New Plymouth).
