GERMAN SECRET DISCOVERED
— ♦ The announcement that tho Ministry of Munitions lias sanctioned tlie erection of large dye works at Basford, near Nottingham, conceals an interesting trade romance, says the London "Observer." For many years British hosiery manufacturers and . shippers wero beaten by tho Germans in_ the production of fine black cotton hosiery. Tho Germans established practically a monopoly, the secret of their ascendancy being in tho Hermsdorf black dye, a jealously-guarded trade secret. Mr. A. H. Hawley, head of the Sketchley Dvo "Works, set himself to discover the Hwpnsdorf formula. After many journeys to Germany and tho expenditure of much money, the complete formula, owned by Louis Hermsdorf, and a full plant of German manufacture oh tho Hermsdorf model,, were captured for Hinckley.
