UNCERTAINTY OF RUSSIAN-RUMANIAN POSITION
GENERAL BRUSILOFF IN CONSULTATION ALL GERMAN ATTACKS IN BRAILA REGION BROKEN - (By Telegraph— Association—Copyright). , London, January 3. Ihe latest news from Rumania, states that General Brusiloff has arrived at headquarters to confer with King Ferdinand and the French Military Ad- ■ viser. _ "■■■ ■■' Despite the resistance of the Russo-Rumanians, General von Mackenson is pushing towards Braila and Focsani. The enemy has also broken through the Carpathian passes into Moldavia, and is forcing his way down the valleys leading to the Seretli, the rapid current of which makes its passage most hazardous. This is an admirable spot for a Russo-Rumanian stand. Thus far, all the' German attacks in the Braila region have been broken. The Russians are resisting the German advance from the Moldavian highlands in nearly all the valleys. If the Sereth line proves untenable owing to the enemy converging from the west and south, the Russo-Rumanians will probably retire beyond the Bessarabia frontier. The Germans, meanwhile, are carrying on the demonstrations, and preventing the Russians from sending fresh effectives southwards. They are also increasing their activity at Tchiksereda (in Transylvania), in order to hamper Russian freedom of manoeuvre. The length of the Russo-Rumanian front, beginning at Tchiksereda skirting the Sereth, and terminating at Braila, is two hundred kilometres (about one hundred and twenty-five miles).—Aus.-N.Z.
