GRAND SHERIFF OF MECCA (Rec. January 4, 7.10 p.m.) London, January 3. • Tho Grand Sheriff of Mecca, has been • notified that his assumption of the title of Hejaz has been definitely recognised by Britain, France, and Italy.—Reuter. 1 [Hjb Highness the Grand Sheriff of Mecca, supported by .the Arab tribes of 1 West and Central Arabia, proclaimed • Arab independence of Turkey and of Ottoman rule, under whoso maladministration and inaction the country had so long suffered. Operations against Turkey began about June 9, 1916, and resulted in the signal success of the Sheriff's forces. Mecca, Jeddah, and i Taif were soon captured, Medina was 3 besieged a.nd the garrison capitulated. j The Grand Sheriff, after settling with tha Turks, asked for the recognition of the Powers, which has now been granted.]
