MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Messrs. J. Ellison and D. Koir, J.P.'s, presided over a sitting of the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning. i'hyllis Eerraro was sentenced to one month's imprisonment with hard labour for being an idle and disorderly person. For insobriety, Cornelius Sullivan was fined 55., with the alternative of 48 hours' imprisonment. John Clark, alias M'Donald, pleaded guilty to assaulting Frank AVatson M'lvor. Both the complainant and the accused appoared in uniform, the latter being a returned soldier wearing a corporal's stripes. The accused alleged provocation, but the Bench took theview that his action had been" unjustified. He was convicted and ordered to pay expenses, amounting to 10s. 6d. An alternative of 48 hours' imprisonment was given. James Steven O'Neil was further remanded to January 8 on. charges' of having assaulted Adrianus Dirge, ConBtables Cox and Howard Webby, the last-named in such a way as to cause him actual bodily harm. Jeremiah M'Mahon and Henry Ernest George Sohvay were remanded to the same date on a chargo similar to the third preferred against O'Neil. John William Marshall, John Henry Greig, and Alexander Waters were further remanded to January 10 on a charge of having, on December 26, broken and entered by day the New Zealander Hote,l, and stolcu therefrom liquor to the value of £5 7s. Charged with stealing from the' person of Robert Dawson the amount of •2s. 10d., Homy Francis Ilroy, with several aliases, was further remanded for a week. Frank Hunt was further remanded to Monday on a charge of stealing a number of articles, chiefly of clothing, of a total value of £8 14s. i)d., the property of Arthur Rouse.
