QUEENSLAND'S MEAT TRADE
The North Queensland Meat "Works liayo had a record season, according to tlio "Register." Approximately 188,000 head of cattle- and 150,000 sheep have' been slaughtered. TMs is an increase over 1915 returns of 48,(X)0 head of cattle and 100,000 sheep, and tho weight por head of cattlo has averaged from 201b. to 301b. higher. A further increase in the average weight is expected for 1917. The purchasing>,price of tlio stock would ■ run into about £2,150,000; or about£2.soo,ooo may be put as the .value of the meat works product exported. . A large number of cattle in the south-west, -which were debarred from the Adelaide, Broken Hill, and Sydney markets, and could not cross the • .drought-stricken area to Charloville, were.driven north up the Georgina and Diamantina, tolhe Burdeldii or Townsville works. Townsville was the chief meat-exporting port of Australasia in 1916. Through the extension of railways to Butru and Mount Cuthbert, fresh cattle country has been tapped. The largest quantity of stock was treated at the Ross River works, where 81,50 i) head of cattle and 80,000 sheep;ivere put through.
