NEW YEAR RACING
AUCKLAND MEETING BISOGNE WINS ROYAL STAKES. ,THE TOPI? EEVERS.ES DEFEAT BY SASANOFBy Telegraph—Special Correspondent. . Auckland, January 2. ■ The A.J-C. races were continued in dull ,Veather. Tho totalisator turnoror' was (.■£56,855. against JE5i,918 laat year. As .compared- with last year, the total increase for tho meeting was .£21,016. The going was soft but not muddy to-day. It rained heavily' during tho Eight, and there was a thunderstorm in the morning, but it began to clear up 'about nine o'clock, and remained fine for the vest of the day. Tho rumour got. abroad that John Barleycorn, had developed a touch of lameness, and Depredation and Multiplication ■ were made the two principal favourites for the Grand Stand Hamlioap. Depredation iad the inside running, but was soon last, and never got within elriking. distance. Multiplication also ran. disapjpointingly; - The race eventually resolved itself into a contest between AVishiul fend Colonel Soult, rind the judge was finable to separate them at the post. l\Vishful had run consistently during the aieeting, and admirers of Colonel Soult p-ere expecting great things from him. It looked as if Biplano could not be leaten in the Eoyal Stakes as soon as dt became known that Desert Gold was jiot to bo a competitor. ■ According to the machine there was nothing in tho race but BipTane and Hymestra. It did '-not look as if Bisogno could carry his (heavy woight of 9st. 10lb. to victory, but Mr. Alexander's horse is a great weighttoarrier, and the heavy going was just ■what he wanted. Hymestra was the first *to show out, closely followed by Biplane, hut when the straight was reached ffisogne came along . with (magnificent 'dash and beat Biplano in a hard-fought finish by half a length. The withdrawal cf Desert Gold was a disappointment from one point of view, but it is 'doubtful if the race would have been 60 interesting if Mr. Lowry's mare had heen a competitor. The meeting between Sasataof, The JToff, and Bjorneborg in the Auckland Slate was looked forward to with much Snterest. The Melbourne Cup winner Went out favourite, but Bjorneborg's. running m the A.R.C. Handicap appeared 'to give him a good, chance. Tho race, 'lowever, resolved itself into another duel ibetween Sasanof and The Toff. Sasanof •led for three parts of the distance, when Ifhe Toff came up to him, and side by Ipide the two fought it out up the ■ straight. The race resulted in a reversal of the Derby order, The Toff winning by about half a length. His fine performance was heartily applauded by the "crowd. Bjorneborg was never really dangerous. . .. ■ A big field faced the starter in the County Handicap, Bimeter being made a strong favourite,, but thn winner turned lip in Torotoro, who performed successfully at Ayondale recently, and has run consistently at the present meeting. Bitoeter was prominent all through the .race, but was unable to cut down Toroioro's lead in the straight. • By Telegraph—Press Association.
