1 ', Miss do Vin, who is expected to arrive in Auckland shortly, says the London correspondent of the "Star," went to South Africa towards the end of the Boer War as one of twenty New Zealand teachers who went to help in 'the Concentration-Camps.' She has since,' except when a long enough vacation enabled her to '• take a run home to New Zealand, been in the teaching profession in the Transvaal. Miss de Vin has a fund of picturesque and even dangerous experiences 'to draw upon concerning her South African life in Johannesburg, She went through the dreadful strike and martial law period, and 6aw some of its most tragio episodes when the military fired on the strikers in the streets. She has wanderedas far. north as that-wonder-ful fall in thaßhodesian heart of Africa on the Zambesi.. Recently she resigned from-her post in Mayfair School in the west end of Johannesburg, and went to England for a holiday. .. " ■ ;■■'.■ ' '
Mr. Hall Caino, who has been, touring through Groat Britain to see something of -what the-women of the country are doing',, says that it is impossible to say enough in their praise. It is: not : only their willingness h<) -'ad-', mires, bufc'their resourcefulness,'- and; even physical' strength. Some of them, he says, could not be surpassed in their work by any man on earth. Travelling on a railway in. which, the porters anditicket collectors were women, in which the cleaning and some of tlie stoking was done by women, ho arrived in Scotland to find women not /only"farming, driving, and conducting trams and 'buses, but also at work in the, shipyards. .Clad in"trousers and overalls, and swung on. seats from . ships' sides, women were at work painty ing. In the same garments they were below assisting with carpentering:and upholstering, , and Mr. Hall Caine says he knows for a fact that if their country .would permit them there are thousands of women, drilled and able to shoot, who would go into the trenches to-morrow to assist, or relieve, brothers, husbands, and sons. , - • ;, For Ladies' Gifts ' our» SilK Ankled Ho?e at 25.: lid., 3s. 6d.,.. and is. 6d. would make ideal "Christmas Presents.
