NEW YEAR RACING

. ./ WAIRARAPA MEETING WANT WINS THE CUP. By Telegraph-Special Correspondent. -.' : .', • "■■.' Cartertonj January 1. . •Che Wairarapa races opened to-day in fine weather before a/record attendance. '~The: totalisator receipts for the day ivcro £18,681; a decrease of-£1702 on last year's investments. ■ There was a good field numerically in the Maiden Hack Handicap, and the publio sized up the situation correctly by mating Waimatoa favourite. He drew the rails, and beginning smartly never let the others in. Altitude was running second to him to the turn, where the well-bred Black HiE came on the.scene, and though ho had no chance of winning ho easily displaced Altitude, . who'finished third. Tho next to pass the judge were Lady Edith, who got a bad run. Sir, Thomas, and Colour Sergeant. . ■:" ;■'.'' Sweet Tipperary was the favourite in the Tuhitarata Handicap, in which there were only four other starters. At the • start the favourite, began smartly, but . • y/oß' steadied, and Otter led to the straight entrance, where the black filly got in front, and,' resisting challenges ,' From' Need and Mt. Victoria, she won by 'a length. Perceler made a good showing for five furlongs, but was then done with. Consultation • was better - backed than Kongora and Pall Mall in,the Rimutaka Honoicap. At~the v start.the favourite was slow to find her feet, and was soon toiling uuthe rear, while Pall Mall and Discussion set a fast pace. The field ■. ■ ' closed up at the bottom of the straight, and the leaders compounded at the distance. Then Try Again shot out, and To Opai followed the ( trio, finishing 'several length?, in front of the others. was clear of Discnssion, Con- ■ sulfation, ftnd Pall Mall, who finished in that order. Mascot was tho most 6ought-after in the Cup, while- Montana had many friends. Mr. T. Cameron e£Eected a perfect start, and when the field settled down Mascot led. Eose Pink and Mon- '. tana. Down the'back Want moved up into eecond place, and apross_tho bottom Jie was alongside Mascot, while Montana took third place. In the straight Want forged ahead, and won nicely by a length, while Masoot beat Montana by a head. Eose Pink, Merrie Gain, and Orleans finished in' that order. The winner was ridden by the English horseman, T. Metcalfe, whose first success it i was in this country. '.' ■-• The Whitney-owned pair, Trentham . Rose and Arihia carried the bulk of the money in-the Nursery Handicap, but both got'badly away. Association was 'first- out, while Arihia was left. Trent•hajn Eose, who lost a lot of ground, joined Association at the end:of a couple of furlongs, hut the pair ran wide enter- " dng the straight, but Pervola got up on the fence. ' Over the last fifty yards,Cooing, who had been in the rear, came fast on the outside, and won by a Jieck from Association. Pervolo was just clear of Trentham Eose. The winner is one of the Messrs. Riddiford'e team, and is by •' Boniform, from the imported Ringdove. This was her first appearance in a race. ■ . • ■ Tho Puldo Hack Handicap was one of /.the best betting races of the day, five of the runners being well fancied. An outsider in lady General, who;drew the . outside at the' barrier, won in eoinmand- ' ing style at the finish. At the start Merry Andrew led Arrahna and Comment, but as they raced into the straisht Lady General ran, through in the middle of the field, and holding her position to the post, she was three clear lengths in (front of Blackhill, who: just defeated % Merry Andrew. Comment, Ally, and Arrahna iperei the next to finieh. C. Eeed, . rider of Humorist, had a very rough 'Tide, as he lost both his irons when the field jumped off. . ■ OMwia was a four-figure favourite in the Eeynolds Handicap, and , jumping ; out welt she and Marsinoh Tan together for half a mile, when the .favourite . forged ahead. Ladify come fast in the ' straight, but the favourite held her own ■ end won by a length. Prince Laddo just .beat Rumania'for third place. Mareinah was the last -to finish. '• There ware eix starters in the Hack Welter Handicap. Sir Wallace, who has I>een racing consistently,'• but with no luck, lately, lyas a, slightly .better fav- ' traxice than Probation, with the others ...iiegleoted. The Wo horses named finish,;,ed in the order indicated on the machine. ,-The winner has been in second place on ;several occasions lately, and his win was fully deserved. • • v. ■ --■•'•' DETAILED RESULTS. • ' By Telegraph—Press Association. . AUCKLAND MEETING

SASANOF WINS THE DERBY. JOHN BAELEYCORN SCORES IN BIG HANDICAP. By. Telegraph—Special' Correspondent. •- '■ • January 1. ; - The third' day of tne AJflgkland Taces ;■• was held, iu dull weather, before a large 1 attendance. Eain. set in before the last ; 'race.' The totalisator handled .£73,491, compared with .£62,015 laet year, an increaso of .£10,876. • : ! . Sasanof .just managed.to defeat The ToS in the Derby by a head, after a i great race up the , straight. Egypt led [ for ■ three-quarters of the distance, and , then- Sasanof got on terms with him. I •j.'ho- Toff was finishing faster than Sae- ' anof, and in another twenty yards he would have been in front. -Downham, who had tho inside position, was made ; favourite in the New-martiet Handioap. He shot out' in front, but was quickly headed by King Lupin, who won with a ! good deal to spare. After his great run in I the Slimmer Cup, it is rather surprising . that King Lupin's chances were not more . fancied by the pnblic. Tete-a-tete ran , disappointingly. There aro signs that, Bisogne has been asked to do too much , at this meeting. Ho seems to have lost some of his dash. In his race to-day he was never dangerous. John Barley- ; corn was made a slightly better favour- ! ite than Bjornebor? in the Auckland I Eacing.Club Handicap. This was no • doubt due to his sou.nd performance in the Summer Cup, in which, event he was running stronger than either of the two , other placed hoTses at' the finish. It thus appeared'that the extra, quarter of i a mile would not trouble him. Ho .was ! lying third all the way,'going very coni fidently until the entrance to ' the ! straight, >rhen he shot to.the front and won rather easily. DETAILS OF THE RACING.
