QUEENSLAND FLOOD DISASTER
I MANY EILLED AND MISSING. (Rec. January 2, 0.10 a.m.) Brisbane, January 1. Meagre details have been received of a flood disaster in the Claremont. Heavy rains caused the overflow of Sandy Creek, and a great body of water swept the town; three parte of the main street were washed away, and all the houses in the low-lying parts ( ' demolished. -.■■■• The railway s and telegraph lines ha.vs been washed away, aiid the only communication is by telephone. Tho first reports stated that a.hun« dred people were', drowned of Tfiissing, but later police reports give the number as twenty-five drowned and fifteen missing. Included in the missing "are : Mr. Crawford; ex-inember of" Parliament for Mount Morgan, and Stock-In-specter Young. The food' supply.ii short, and relief is being sent oai-=-/ , Pres,s Assn.
