"General von Mackensen encountered strong resistance northward and eastward of Rimnicu Sarat, but after a strenuous attack entered, tho enemy's position and gained ground. January 1, 7.40 p.m.) 'London, December 31., A wireless Russian official, message states that there were fierce battles in the Oitoz Valley. The enemy, reinforced, repeatedly attacked and ' captured several heights. The enemy is stubbornly attacking on tho Moldavian frontier. . The offensive north-west of Sevej failed. The Rumanians were victorious, and took many prisoners. Th& heights on the Upper Putna frequently changed hands, and remained in the enemy's possession. The Rusbo-Ru-maniaris dislodged the enemy at Bordeschi. The enemy repulsed the Rumanians north-west of the Huzeuforsany railway. A wireless Austrian official message states: "East and north-east of Kezdi Vasarhely we took Nereju Tulnici."— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.-R«uter. • FLEEING FROM THE ENEMY PLIGHT OF RUMANIANS (Rec. January 2, 0.15 a.m.) Petrograd, January 1. The flight of Rumanian civilians from the' districts occupied and threatened by the enemy has assumed vast proportions. The stations are . crowded with fugitives, miserably awaiting trains. Happily the winter is mild, otherwise thousands would die of cold. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. RUMANIAN OIL WELLS SKILFULLY DESTROYED Amsterdam, December 31. The latest details of,the destruction of the Rumanian oil wells are contained in the Munich newspaper "Neueste Nachrichten." It says.the damage on the surface amounts to £8,000,000 sterling. . This does not include the loss of production and tho unestimated damage derground. All the engine houses, cranes, surface and underground machinery were smashed, and the oil tanks were fired. The destruction was not only workmanlike but skilful.—Reuter. .
