Lord Curzon, in a. message to tho Primrose League, says it seems likely that the war must contimio well into another year, perhaps longer. Intriguing suggestions on the subject of peace continue to issue from Germany. Count Bernstorff takes the view that the Allied reply loaves Germany an opening—to state terms. In. Allied circles an opti- . mistio view is,taken of prospects in the 1917 campaign. Lord Sydenham remarks, on this subject, that the Germans have learned that safety is no longer to be found in the most elaborate defences,, and that the Allies will continue the attack this year upon a far larger scale than in 1916, and with "certainty of Buccess. Heavy fighting continues in Rumania, with as yet no very definite result. It is announced, that Sir Douglas Haig has been made a Field-Marshal, and General Rawlinson and General Gough, who directed tho British ■ operations on the Somme, have each been advanced a step. Honours and 'awards have been conferred upon a number of New Zealanders, including Sir Andrew Russell, commanding the New Zealand Division, and Brigadier-General Ch aytdr, who commands tho New Zealand Brigade of the Arizac Mounted Division in Egypt. .
