MANAWATU MEETING RED RIBBON WINS BIG HANDICAP. By Teleßraph—Special Correspondent. Palmerston North. December 29. The Manawatu meeting cuncluded in glorious weather. The totalisator handled .1132,614, against ,£23,844 on the corresponding day last year, making a total of JC105.709 for tho meeting.; Miralma, who was making her first appearance at the meeting, was at a very short price in tho opening event. She failed badly, and at lio stage of the race looked liko a winner. She finished tailed off. The early running was made by Captain Glossop, but at the half-mile lVamur took charge, and,, though-chal-lenged by Multum and Silemis, sho maintained her advantage and won by a head. Silenus defeated Multum by a nock.

All started in the Hurdles. The public selected Parewanui, Portland Lady, and Atuatoro in that order. The favourite was first to move, but Portland Lady soon ran to the front, and, hanging badly, she led into the straight. Down the back Atuatoro, who had been slow to get going, and .Tern ran up to Parewanui, while Janitor also -became prominent. In the -straight Portland Lady held her own, and won by three lengths from Atuatoro, with Jem tho same distance away. , Janitor, Mount Victoria, and Parewanui were tho next to finish. From a time point of view the gallop was one of tho best of the meeting. '.'•'.'. A very pronounced favourite in Hoclcbound was badly defeated in the CI andeboye Welter Handicap, in which Otter was on the move when the barrier rose, and kept the lead throughout. Carillon, who got away badly, was finishing on well at tho end, and would probably have won had he left the mark on even terms with the others. Rockbound was in Recond place until the last few strides. Marginal) shaped badly, . .After the- withdrawal of Panmuro the public fastened on Client as the best of. ennd things for the Liverpool Hnndicap; The favourite was sweating freely in the birdcage, and several of tlip others bore signs of having done enough racing. At the start nose Pink led from Red Ribbon and Client, with Bon Revo handy. The field was bunched on the home bend, but at the distance Client shot out, followed by Red Ribbon. In tho finish the latter wore down the favourite, and won by a length'. Bon Reve was three lengths away, a head in front of Gold Soult. Devotion was badly kicked at the post.

Comment was the favourite in the Westbury Hack Handicap, but there were heavy investments on Coropett, Golden Glade, nnd Merrie Poto. The two favourites began smartly., but Likely was left several lengths. Golden Giade soon caught the leader, and entered the straight just clear of Comment. Merrie Poto came fast in the stvaiiht, l>ut just failed to renoli Golden Glade. The consistent Lndy Edith was third and Comment next.

Backers received another reverse in tlie Canii) Handicap, when Ararat went undergo the lightlr-weiglitpd Ladifv. The winner was wcTl fancied, but backers made Ararat a eood favourite, and lost a few shillings in the pound. Sail Kome wa« withdrawn from the Christmas Hack Welter, which.was won by the Trentham-tr-'iined Probation, who raced fonsistenHy throiHiout the.me»tint. ■ NnnniT, the second favourite, finis'>«d next to the winner.. Gimqup registered his third win at the rr-ppfing in the concluding event, in wl-Hi h" was allowed to pay n- false The very useful Pangitero was second. ; DETAILED RESULTS^ By Telegraph—Press Association.
