Colden Wedding, . On Christmas Day, 1866, Mi-, and Mrs. ■lliomas Zillwood, df Carterton, were married at - Greytown by Rev. £> Desbois,. and on Monday last they celebrated their golden wedding. Mrs . Zillwood was the third daughter of the latei.Mr._Hart Udy, one of the pioneers o the Wairarapa, and Mr. Zillwood came to I\ew Zealand with his parents 'O* ago, when he was 12 months ' . the past CO years they havo n'rx 111 Wairarapa— at Greytown, Matarawa, and Carterton. During these years eight children have been born to them—five sons and' three daughters, of whom four sons (Messrs. Frank, Len, Chriss, and • Percy Zillwood) and one daughter (Mrs. W. ! Chalmers) are still living; also eloven grandchildren. The celebration of tho golden-wedding was a very happy one. It was held in a_ largo marqueo, erected for tho occasion on Mr. Zillwood's premises,- and was prettily decorated l , p There were present children, grandchildren, other relations, and some of their closer friends. After the breakfast tho following toasts were proposed- and honoured:'—"The King," "The happy couple." "Absent relations and friends," "A happy closing of the old and , a. healthy prosperous new year." During the day some valuable mementoes were presented tliom,, with hearty congratulations and good' wishes. On Christmas Eve the Carterton Methodist Choir serenaded tho esteemed couple. The whole function was 'of the happiest nature, and its interest was added to by the presence of Mrs. Welch and' Mr. James Ticehurst, sister and. brother-in-law of Mrs. Zillwood, both of whom were at the wedding 50 years ago, Mr. Ticehurst being the "best man" on'that occasion. -
Miss Mackenzie, one of the Otago representatives to the annual meeting of the N.Z.8.1., is staying at Caulfield House. - ,
St. Mark's Church, Carterton, was the scene of, an interesting military wedding, Lieut. Stanley Carter being united to Miss Holly ("Olga") Harris,* only daughter.of.,Mrs...M. .'Harris, of Olareville, and eldest granddaughter of tho lato Mr. Charles. Harris, of Hautotara, Martiuborough. The bridegroom was the : youngest son of Major Carter, of Auckland,' and went to tho war witli the Fifth Reinforcements, taking part in some hard fighting on Gallipoli, where ho was wounded, by shrapnel and invalided homo. Tho bride was attended by the Misses Harris (2), of Martinborough, and the Missos Jensen (2), of Auckland. Lieut. Patterson, of tho Twentieth M.H., was best man, and James Holland groomsman. The dl'ess of-the bride was of ivory satin and old lace, and veil, and she carried a bouquet of cream orchids and orange blossoms. Tho bridesmaids wore merve satin and lace veils, the younger ones "wearing lace caps. Tho bridegroom's present ■ to. tho bride was a diamond pendant, and the bride presented the bridegroom with a signet ring. To tho . chief brid'esmaid tho bridegroom gave a gold bangle, and to the three little girls pendants and gold chains. The brido was given away by lWr brother, who was in khaki, and the ceremony was performed by the Ilev. It. Young, vioar of St. Mark's. Tho Wedding March was played by Bandmaster Wicks, of Featherston Camp. Mr. and Mrs. Carter will > reside ii} (jreytown. . ■
Mrs. Mary Ann AVilliams, of Waipukurau, died suddenly on Saturday morning. The deceased had been subject to apoplexy at various times, but on Saturday morning she was in her usual health, and quite cheerful. After saying good-byo to her nicce, who was leaving for Wellington, sho returned to her home. Shortly afterwards Mrs. Gore, her daughter-in-law, found tho old lady on the floor of the house quite dead. The deceased survived her late husband by fourteen years. A native of Jersey Island, sho arrived in the Dominion in the sljip Clarenco in January, 1875. For about nine years she resided in Napier. Leaving Napier, she went to Porangahau lor two yeaTS, finally taking up her residenco in Waipukurau. Since tho* formation of the' Bed Cross Association in Waipukurau sho had taken an active part in the work, likewise in that of tho Mothers' Union. A grown-up family is left, namely, Mrs. D. Young, and Mr. F. W. Gore; of Waipukurau, and Mr. T. Gore, of Paliiatua.
