TAINUI AT AUCKLAND. The Shaw, Savill and Albion's steamer Tainui arrived at, Auckland on Monday morning, -with passengers and cargo Irom London. On this, her twentieth, voyage, she brought a number of returned soldiers among tho passengers. Tho Tainui puts out 1400 tons of cargo at Auckland before leaving for south. Sho soiled from Plymouth on November 2, and arrived at Cape Town on November 26. Bobart was reached, en route to Auckland, on December 18. Tho weather -was good except showery after leaving tho English Channel, when it was rough for four or five days. Captain T. M. MoCfatt has with him: Chief officer, Mr. Nelson; second, Mr. A. POTT HACKING FROM NEW YORK. Tho steamor Port Hacking arrived .at Auckland on Saturday afternoon from Now York, via the Panama Canal. She lert the American port on November IB with a large general oargo lifted, thcro for Australian and. Dominion ports. The steamer passed through the Panama Canal on November 27, and made the latter section of tho voyage in 24i days. Tho weather was fine until off tho NewZealand coast, when tho Port Hacking met heavy rains. Before tho C. and 1). Lino adopted tho afflx of Port. for tho units of their fleet, tho Port Hacking was known as the Mimiro. Captain 8. C. Cottell has with him as chief officer, Mr. G. W. Pcarn; second, Mr. H. E. Hyde; third, Mr. G. L. "Hazelwood; fourth, Mr. W li. Johnston; chief engineer, Mr. D. Webster; second, Mr. T. W. Barrett; third, Mr. H. M'Kcnzie; fourth, Mr. W. Dow; fifth, Mr. T. S. Mitchell: chief refrigerating engineer, Mr. D. J. Dick; second, Mr. R. Alcock; Marconi operator, Mr. W. Graham; second. Mr. J. J. Crosby. Mr. Mitchell, tho fifth engineer, has been on service with the homo forces in France. Tho Port Hacking has about 1700 tons of general cargo for Auckland. She should leavo for south at the end of this week.
MAITAI FEOM 'FRISCO. Tho Union Company advise that it is improbable that the Maitai, from San Francisco, -will tret to "Wellington until Monday next, £ho left San Francisco on December 6.

The 6.5. and A. liner Kia Ora. arrived at Auckland at 4.25 p.m. on Tuesday. According to present advices she should get hero on Tuesday next. .
RAJIANGA FOR AUSTRALIA, ' Advice has been received that the new Shaw, Savill and Albion liner Raranga is expected to reach Australia next month from London. Tho Raranga is ono of the throe new cargo steamers recently constructed for the S.S. and A. Company for the New Zealand-Australia-England trade. She is" a vessel of about 10,000 tons.
SOUTHTVAITE AT LYTTELTON. On Saturday last tho cargo steamer Southwaito arrived at Lyttelton from New York direct. She left the American port on November 11, and the voyage throughout was uneventful. (She has 800 tons of cargo for Lyttelton, and, after discharging. will proceed on to Dunedin and Australian ports. The Southwaite, a vessel of 3618 tons, was built twelve years ago. Captain 0. Uippon is in command, and has associated, .with him:—Chief officer, Mr. D. Robertson; second, Mr. A. Rensted; chief engineer, Mr. E. J. Howkate; second, Mr. J. Fearin; third, Mr. J. Potter; and fourth, Mr. J. Miles. j CTOENE AT MELBOURNE. The one-time Qdrmaii-Australian steamer Adelaide, now known as the Ounene, arrived at Melbourne on December 15 from Hamburg, via Antwerp, London, and Cape Town. Tho journey was commenced on July 4, 1914, and Antwerp was left on July 11. TVhen war was declared the Adelaide put in to tho Portuguese port of Loanda, but she was seized when Portugal joined tho Allies. It is stated that there is some Now Zealand cargo aboard vessel.
WANGAOTI FOE. AUCKLAND. For some unknown reason misleading advice lias frequently found its "way into the Dominion Press regarding -vessels sailing from Australian ports, says the Auckland "Star." The Wanganui, one of the best ltnown intercolonial sailers, is the latest victim of incorrect messages.. and slie has been cabled as having left Newcastle for Wellington. TMb is apparently incorrect, our previous intimation of the vessel coming to Auckland having been since authenticated. Captain Owens is in charge of the Wanganui. After putting out superphosphates and timber at Auckland she will go to Whangaroa to load for Australia. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. C. A. Brent, purser of the Oorinna, has come ashore, and. has been replaced by Mr. A. Barker. Mr. W. J. Neville, purser of the Mapoorika, has come ashore. ■ Mr. W. Whiting, purser of the Kamona, has signed off. Mr. A. M'Kinnon, mate of the Hairera, has come ashore on holiday leave. He has been replaced by Mr. J. W. Orotty. Mr. W. Crammond, purser of the Monowai, has come ashore. ' Captain Johansen, formerly master of the coastal steamer Mana, has been appointed stevedoro at Wellington for the South Taranaki Shipping Company in place of the late Oaptain Ward. Captain H. Williams, of the Tarawera, has come ashore, and Captain Cameron has taken charge of the vessel. The Tainui, at present in Waitara, is to stay at that port until after the New Year. Messrs. Johnston and 00. advise that the Blenheim, which sailed for Havelock and Pelorus Sound last evening, will get back here on Saturday, and -will probably sail for those ports again on Tuesday next. The Himitangi left Wellington for the Chatham Islands shortly after noon yesterday. She goes to Lyttelton from the Chatham Islands, and then comes on to Wellington. \ The Calm is due from Lyttelton to-day, and'sails this afternoon for Wanganui, from which port sho gocß south. . Owing to inability to get coal, the Canterbury Steamship Company's Breeze is at present laid up at Lyttelton. Tho schooner Huia iB at present loading explosives ex tho Kin, Ora at Auckland. She should get to* Wellington -with the local portion lato next -week. • The Uosamond leaves Wellington at 6 p.m. to-day for Timaru, Dunedin, and Bluff. She receives cargo until 3 p.m. The Corinna, which sailed for New Plymouth yesterday, is due back here on Friday ivith 20,000 boxes of butter to discharge. She le&ves here on Saturday for Dunedin. The {Cini leaves Lyttelton at 5 p.m. today for Wellington. She will load for New Plymouth at Wellington, probably getting, away on Friday or Saturday for that port. The "Union C-ompany's cargo steamer Waipori left Wellington yesterday for Kaipara, -where she 'will load a cargo of timber for Australia. The Ifaru left Timaru last night for Wellington. Sho soils at tho end of tho week far Westport and Grcymouth. Tlie Flora, which has just taken a cargo of coal from Westport to Auckland, will lay up at the northern port until her next trip to tho Eastern 1 Pacific.
There is now a General in tlie British Army 'veceiving a . private's pay. Possibly readers have guessed at once that it is a case of a man with the Christian name of I, "General." _ He is a nativo of Burnley, where military names seem to have been rather fashionable. A similar practice has prevailed in the adjoining town of Padiham, which has furnished the ranks with a soldier boasting the name of "Admiral.'' It would have been .more appropriate if he had chosen the senior service. Not long ago the Padiham Tribunal were startled at hearing an appeal announced from "General ." The surpriso subsided as the members understood that the august-sounding title was the man's Christian name. In the case of another appeal it was stated that "Major " had been rejected by the Medical Board..
