(Prom tJiir Special Correspondent.) Auckland, December 27. Admiral Wood put up 11 wonderful performance in the Auckland Trotting Cup, and well deserved the ovation he received after tho race. The course was a veritable sea 'of mud, and tho pouring rain made everything so uncertain that the genera! opinion was that anything might win. Before the race commonoed tho wheels of Admiral Wood's machine wero clogged, inches deep with mild, ami it looked as if his chances were very small. Everything seemed, to favour tlio limit horses, but a good horso is always a goodhouse, and Admiral Wood got going quickly, and with a good will he got in front before entering the straight on the way home, and kept there. Childsdaie, -who went out favourite, also ran a splendid race, and got second place. Lady Haldaine, the second favourite, was very liiicoinfortablo in tho rain and mud. She started badly, and was never prominent. After the Cup raco it was decided to postpono tho other events on the programme till 'next day. By Telegraph—Press Association. 'Iho latest political development in Germany is a protest in the Press against the influence of commerce in the Government. It is pointed out that von Bethmann-Hollweg, Dr. Helfferich, Dolbruck, Sewald, Itathenau, Ballin, Goldberger, and others all come from business or commercial families, and that "scarcely one "of tliem belongs by origin or tradition to those quarters which have built the Prussian State in a labour of two hundred years." "Those quarters," of course, indicates the. Junkers or Agrarians, who once held autocratic sway in Prussia, and who for dccades have been the power behind the Throne and Government. Agriculture to-day represents only about a c]unrter of Germany, but tho Junkers still have a largo say in matters of policy. The Junker organisation, the Farmers' Alliance, has three million members, and they have at thoir head Dr. von Heydebrand, who is known as the "uncrowned King of Prussia," and who leads the Conservative-Agrarian Party. He is' hardly five feet- in height,, but lie has ' great'power both in the Reichstag.and the Prussian Diet. It was his speech against tho Government on tho Moroccan question that tho Crown Prince applauded and was punished by the Kaiser for doing it. It was von Hovdebrand and his - associates, too, who brought about Bulow's fall, benaiißo tlioy thought that ho had designs on , the Kaiser's "divino right." I
