THE BATOCKI BABY
t — WOMAN'S EMBARRASSING GIFT TO BERLIN OFFICIAL. . "Ratocki's baby" is the latest topic of Berlin. The "llontag" tells the following edifying story:— "On Saturday a woman with a five months old baby came before the Bread Committee of East Berlin and demanded a milk card. The female clerk refused to comply with the demand because the card ought to have been appliod for the previous day. After a protracted discussion the woman suddenly placed the baby on the table, saying: 'If you cannot give me a milk card I shall be unable to feed my baby. You can keep it,' and sho ran off." As neither the name nor the address of the woman was known to the authorities, tho baby could not be returned, and had eventually to be taken to the Municipal Orphanage. Berlin humorists have now christened the baby after Herr von Batoeki, and suggest that if lie continues to manage the food supply in tho same fashion as hitherto he may soon become tho father of a very numerous family.
