AUCKLAND MEETING
DEPREDATION WINS THE CUP. ' t BISOGNE'S RAILWAY HANDICAP, j By Telegraph-Special Correspondent, t . Auckland, December 26: ] ' The Auckland Cup Meeting opened to- ' day' in good weather. There was a very large attendance, and 1 the track was in perfect racing condition. The totahsator registered as against MS.-il last c y Depredation's win in the Auckland Cup j overturned many confident expectations, } and those'who remained faithful to him ] in spito of disconcerting rumours reaped j a rich reward. In view of his recent i •performances it is surprising that he did 6 not carry more money. He showed good ( form at Takapuna, though he '"lied. t0 t secure a place. He won the Waipa ; Cup m great style,-and, was going strong .] at the finish. The point in doubt was , whether he could stay out the two miles. , ! The air has been full of rumours about - him during the past week. It is said } that lie has a weak spot, but he was at { the top of his form to-day, and the -, going suited him perfectly. The race ( was a rather straggling one, and lie , won with something to spare. John J Barleycorn did not get a good passage. , He seemed unable to get a clear run at any stage. < In the Railway Handicap Bisogne was , rather slow to get going, but he. came. , witli a great rattle at the business end of the race. He has never been in better form, and his meeting with Desert . Gold should prove very interesting. It is quite possible that he will make Mr. . Dowry's maro gallop harder than she ; has ever galloped before. Biplane's running in the Foal Stakes . was an admirable performance. This , horse will probably show up well again , before the meeting is over. Ho has . gamed for himself a high place among ; the two-year-olds.
