RUSSIAN-RUMANIAN FRONT
SITUATION IMPROVING
Paris, December 25. The "Petit Parisien's" Petrograd correspondent states that the situation in Rumania is improving. The Russians havo gained advantages between the Carpathians and tho Danube. The Russians have fallen back in the Dobrudjai in contact with tho armies on tho left bank of the Danube: The Stroth provides a natural defence for Oab.'z, but Braila is exposed. Tho enemy is completing the repairs to the Cornavoda bridge for the purpose of securing supplies in the Dobrudja. There is violent fighting in the Upper Carpathian valleys.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. ENEMY TRENCHES CAPTURED BY RUSSIANS London, December 25. A Petrograd communique states: "In the Carpathians the Russians, after artillery preparation, attacked the enemy trenches on the heights tiorth of the River Eussa, which were captured after hand-to-hand fighting. A Russian communique states: "The enemy repeatedly failed to recapture a height-in tho Usa Valley on the Moldavian frontier. The Rumanians were pushed back in places in the region of the Kasino River and the Vranchea Mountains. All enemy attacks on the left of the Danube were repelled except that one height was lost on' our left. We have abandoned Isaktcha and Tulcea, in the Dohrudja.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.-Reuter.
KING'S SPEECH
OPENING OF PARLIAMENT
London, December 25. A <~<orrespondenfc at Jassy (the present Rumanian capital) reports that the King, in a speech at the opening of Parliament, said: "Our army has sustained the struggle according to tlie glorious traditions of our ancestors, and in a manner justifying us in looking forward to the future with absolute confidence. Rumania will hear the great hardships and sacrifices of the war courageously, and is- absolutely confident of victory for the-Allies' side, towards which Rumania is determined to use every energy till the end."—Renter.

COMPLETELY DESTROYED
Amsterdam, December 25. The Krupp organ, tho "WestfaliEche Zeitung," admits the complete destruction of Rumanian oil wells, which the Germans have found practically useless. —Ileuter.
