MEDICAL STUDENTS AND THE WAR
Sir,—ln respect to the position of medical students under the Military Service Act, might I suggest that the New Zealand Government follow the lead given them by the Commonwealth Defence Department, viz., to absolutely, define the position of {Tie medical student as regards his, duty to the State.
All Australian medical students in their third year and onwards are exempted from service, and have issued to them a medallion wiiti their military, registration number on it and ■ the words "Volunteered, for active service. Required for home service." The issuo of tho badge is contingent upon the student signing an agreement pledging himself to undertake such | work as the Defence Department shall direct immediately, lio qualifies. Such a step would with that unrest which Dr. Ferguson referred to at Dunedin the other clay, and winch is so inimical to steady work.—l am, etc., MELBOURNE MED. STUDENT.
