WHERE TO GO AND /WHAT TO DO
The weather prospects for the holidays commencing are excellent . at the time of writing. Summer appears to have settled down earlier-this-year than usual, and bright, warm days, with little wind to speak of, have been tho rule during the past weak or so,_ and campers-out are therefore 'an- 1 ticipating a good time. The waterside resoHs are already well filled, and accommodation at any of the bays within the vicinity of Wellington is at a discount. Tho steamer bookings have been equal to any previous Christmas, and the railway authorities have iio complaints to make on the same-score. The outdoor attractions offered by Wellington this Christmas are, as usual, few in number. The chief , event in the turf world of immediate interest to Wellington will be the Manawatu Racing Club's Meeting on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday next, and at New Year there will be the annual race meeting at Tauhe'renikau. > There wilj doubtless be a good many people visiting: the camps, but as most of the men wil] be taking;.advantage of the Christmas leave,- the interest therein will necessarily be a modified one. There will be a pretty continuous time-tablo kept by the ferry-boats plying between Wellington and Day's Bay on Monday,: and Tuesday, particulars of which have been advertised. , , , _ - A big Catholic picnic is to be held at Karori Park on Boxing Day (Tuesday next). , \ \ Tho 'evening entertainments are numerous. On Tuesday evening the Williamson Musical Comedy Company—a combination ,of. sterling artists—will commence a season at the Grand Opera . House in the musical comedy "So Long, Letty." ' A good bill will bo_ provided by the Fuller Company at His Majesty's Theatre, where vaudeville holds court. Up-to-date picture -programmes will be submitted at the King's. Queen's, "Empress, and Everybody's Theatres. On Christmas Night Mr. Clement May is to recite selections from Dickens's "Christmas Carol." The assisting artists will be Miss Eileen Driscoll. Mr. Hamilton Ilodges, and Mr. Frank Thomas. ' . Maidstone I'arlc, at Upper Hutt Railway Station, /will be ooen for. picnic parties during both Christmas and New Year holidays. Hot water in any qu'antitv will be supplied free. The Zoological Gardens, at Newtown Park is acknowledged to contain the most interesting collection •of birds, beasts, and fishes in New Zealand. During recent months the Zoo has been considerably enlarged, and many important Attractions have been added.Dnrinr' tho holidnvs the Zoo will be open daily, and fie timo spent on ;i visit should be well repaid.
