DISTRIBUTION OF PRIZES. The parents and friends of the boys of tho Marist Brothers' School assembled in large numbers on Wednesday night in St. Anno's Hall, Newtown, to witness tlio distribution of prizes'by His Graco Archbishop O'Shea. Tho Venerable Archdeacon Devoy, the Rev. Fathers O'Connell and Hurley, and Messrs. M'Gratli and Henry also liad places 011 the stage. Tho boys gave a short concert, tho choir and school, band being warmly applauded for their rendering of many choice numbers. Masters L. O'Brien, W. M'Carthy, and E. Quill also contributed items. After the coueort the director of the school (Rev. Father Egbert) addressed tho ■ gathoring.. "To complete the. report presented at the school concert in November,'" he said, "I wish to state that tho year 1916 has been particularly successful; the conduct of tho boys and their application to work being very satisfactory. . . . The inspectors' reports and tho results of the recent sixth standard examination show that excellent work is being done in secular studies. Every boy in tho sixth standard was presented and. 43 proficiency certificates obtained. The choir and band have also done very good work, and have assisted in several patriotic ventures. Tlmnks aro' due to the. •Ven. Archdeacon Devoy and Mrs. Macar-thy-Reid. for their generous assistance to the band, and to Mr.-Brown for his able teaching. The boys contributed .£8 to the Now 2eft!and Schools' Belgian lielief Fund, and .£l2 to the Irish Distress Fund. ... I wish to thank His
Grace Archbishop O'Shea and tip other members of the Wellington Catholic Education Board, Rev. Father Hurley, and all the members' of the St. Joseph's Parish School Committee, all the priests and people of the three parishes, ajyl the members of Our Old Boys' Association."
The prize list was as under, donors' names being given in parentheses:—Good conduct (gold medal, Archbishop O'Shea), James Dennis. Dux of school (Mrs. Mac-arthy-Reid's gold medal), Joseph Delaney. Best athlete (gold medal, Dr. Mackin), James Ward. These three names will be placed on the school honours board.
