FIRES OF THE YEAR

During tho year the Municipal Fire Brigade has registered' 165 alarms of fires. Of these 86 were outbreaks in buildings, 26 were gorse or refuso fires, 24 were aud 29 were false alarms. Of the genuine V outbreaks, most of which were checked in their incipient stages, 15 occurred in March and 12 in July. Tho only serious fires during the year (which still has a week to run) have been those which occurred at tho Wellington Gas Company's workshops in Clyde Quay and the recent firo at Lindsay's, Ltd., 011 Lambton Qua.y, Wellington, may bo considered extremely fortunate at tho immunity from serious fires during the year, and the fact that out of 86 outbreaks only two wero responsible for any loss of moment is a hno testimony to tho efficiency of tho brigade in getting to the spot, and settling the fire before it got the upper hand.
