THE DEMAND FOR TONNAGE. In speaking of tho present condition of shipbuilding, Lloyd's annual report Bays:— In lew industries has the effect of war been more widespread than in shipping. The disappearance from tho high seas of the merchant fleets of Germany and -Aus-tria-Hungary, and the continued losses of Allied and neutral shipping, csmbincd with the enormous demands which tho war has made upon £hc available tonnage, produced a shortage which has stimulated the building of ships in every country free to engage in construction. In the United Kingdom merchant shipbuilding is atill seriously restricted by the necessity for the production of, war vessel? of various kinds; and the output remains far below that of normal times. In neutral countries, particularly in tho United States, every effort has been, and is being, made to cope with tho increasing demand for tonnago. That success has attended these efforts is evident from the fact that there is now being built under the inspection of ■ Lloyd's Register of Shipping a larger amount of shipping than has ever been recorded in the history of the society—namely, 620 vessels, of 22,820,709 tons.

WALLSEND AND CENTUM. About 10 p.m., yesterday tho small steamer Wallsend arrived in port from, Melbourne, ana anchored . in the stream, where she will be examined br tho doctor this morning. Up till midnicht therewas i again no sign of the Century, from New York; She is now' nearly a ween overdue, i On arrival, she also will be examined in the stream, afterwards berthing at No. 16 Jervois Quay breastwork.

. a ANTIOPE REFLOATED, v .. After a large amount of strenuous work the barque Antiope, which was driven ashore at the Bluff in Scntember by a hurricane, has been successfully refloated, and the hole made has been -pitched up, to enable her to go to Port Chalmers where she will be docked for repairs. When the Antiope went ashore it was thought in shipping circles that she would remain for good, but the- captain and owners commenced operations..- and their efforjs have been crowned with success.

GREYMOUTH HARBOUR IMPROVEMENTS.

"An important .new scheme for the improvement of the Greymouth Harbour/is at present under consideration by tho board. o»ptain Oox (harbourmaster) has outlined a scheme Vhich will; be ..considered along with, the engineer's report at noxt meeting of the board. ' The leading feature of. the scheme is to divert the present course of the river to between tho tip-heads'. Tho advantage would bo to convert the. river course into a tidal compartment or dock, making it possible to use 3000 feet of wharf, with ' ample standing room. On a modest estimation this should give 3ft. more depth on the bar, and make tho port workable' when, under present conditions. It would he unworkable. An additional 3ft. working draught would enable a modern cargo steamer to take a load of 4000 tons or over. The new river-course would have to be dredged 100 ft. wide, and sufficient for the dredge to float. The scour, it is estimated, would soon clear away the full width and maintain itself to a certain depth. ■' •

At this week's meeting of tho Auckland Harbour Board the engineer, in Ha progress report, atated that excellent progress had been made on the Central Wharf... .. Tho No,. 3 jetty is ■ to be demolished early in the new year to make way for plle ; driving. The demolition of No. 2 jetty had been completed.

The Wootton left for Lyttelton last evening, where she- goes on the slip for overhaul. She should get back here early in the new year. ' The Oorinna loft New Plymouth last evening, and iB expected, .to leave Wellington for New Plymouth, where she will load dairy produce on December 27.

The Mapourika was to have left Nelson at midnight last night, and is due here about 10 o'clock this morning. She leaves at 5 p.m.- tfc-day for Picton and Nelson.

The Waipori is due this m.orrj'ng with a full load of coal from Westport. The Union Company hope to got her away on Saturday evening for Kaipara. . Captain D. M'Lean, of the hospital ship Maheno, is to come ashore on holiday leave, and Captain J. Reid, late of the Paloona. will replace him.
