Gifts to Naval Men. Mrs. Hadfieid (of Paraparauimi) has just received the'''i'ollowiiig letter from Captain Hall Thompson, of H.M.S. Philomel. He says:—"l havo expended the money forwarded on snorts and Tests, which mado'a very seasonable and accoptablo gift for all the ship's company. I contracted to have theni made in Karachi, and after providing two of each sort of garment lor everyone there was about £18 left over. J. then took, the opinion of the-sailors as to what should be done with tho remainder; and" they decided that tho • money should be spent on extra pairs >of shorts, so practically every man got five garments. In addition to tho value to the men I was able to got all of them a uniform pattern, which looks much smarter than tho various odds and ends with which they used to provide themselves: Also of course tho value of the gift is' doubled and more by the feeling it gives that we are not in spite of having been moro or less in exile in the uttermost parts of tho earth for so long. Tho idea of tho gift and the way of sending it could not have been improved upon, because'if the clothes had been sent, wo certainly should not have received thorn for months and months." Captain' Hall Thompson, in conclusion, wishes to thank most sincerely all those - who assisted in the work, particularly , tho committee and stall-holders and the i soldiers, and all those who so kindly 1 assisted the committee, " Soldiers' Room Hostesses. ~ Sunday,.Mrs. M'Coll,; Monday, Mrs. ' Van S.taveren; Tuesday, Mrs ; D. The bridegroom is here, on duty, and will bo returning to the front in a- couple of months. Tho bride wore a pale cream taffetas, awl a handsome lace veil and orange blossoms, and carried a white bouquet. She also wore a beautiful miniature of tho military cross gained by Lieut. Stainton at Gallipoli. Two bridesmaids were in Kttendancc— her sister, Miss Gill, and the bridegroom's sister. Miss Stainton. After the ceremony.a reception was held at the residence of the bride's parents m 71 Ellice Street, only a few lnt'mate friends being present. A Treat for Soldiers in Hospital. A successful means of brightening an hour or twoifor the soldiers in hospital, was provided by Miss Gladys Campbell and some of her dancing pupils, who paid a visit to the men in the Victoria Ward last evening. The centre of the ward was cleared for dancing, and the dancers, who. wore fancy dross, gave tho men a decided treat; Miss. Frances Muter danced very prettily, and the Misses Nieholls and* Lyon gave the clever little sketch, "The Soup and the Savoury." Tho visitors a)l took presents for tho mon i in bed, each of whom was provided with sweets, cigarettes, and fruit. At the close of the entertainment Miss Campbell and her pupils wero onte.'taihed at supper by the matron. • Miss A. Mrs. Bett, of. Palmerston, is arriving at the end of the week, and' will stay.with her mother, Mrs. Gore, in: Aurora Terrace. ■ ■ I The special precautions taken by the committee at the. Christmas party for' 1 children at the Town Hall recently were considered by some people quite .unnecessary, Tho following extract from tho Melbourne "Argus," dealing with a similar gathering, should convince those people .that the action taken by the local committee was wise. "Shortly after 2 o'clock Her Excellently Lady Helen Munro Ferguson arrived. A little later it becamo evident that the number of guests was greatly in excess of that expected. The caterer reported that instead of 500. children, _ 1500 had entered the hall, and tho increase of adults was in proportion. In order to save the situation, 500 additional toys were purchased. However, all attempt' at law and order was frustrated by the clan.oiring children and. their no less excited mothers. Every effort . was made to givo each child a gift, but in the melco it was inevitable that some \ little ones should go without, while others, armed with tho.resoureo which is a recognised Australian characteristic, received far more/than their share. The cause of the chaos, for at times it was nothing else, was that in many cases members had brought not only tßeir..own children, but those of their., neighbours, and the opinion was ex-1 pressed that members' tickets had done ; duty two or three times over. Such a contingency had not been considered, and consequently no provision-had been made for. checking the admissions. In addition to the largo supply of provisions, tho reserve. stock of 451b. of cake, 2.01b. of Swiss roll, and six largo tins _ of''biscuits disappeared as by.' magic. The programme of music and dancing displays had to be abandoned, for it was as much as the committee i could do to meet tho demands '.p fthe occasion." ■ '{
