BIG DEMAND FOR CATTLE. The demand for well-bred station cattlo seems to be a long way greater than tho supply—that is proved by the high prices ruling at the present timo tor yearliug steers, viz., .ClO to ,£l2 10s.' At most of the large .cattle fairs held during the past two months, lines of cattlo showing breeding and any. signs of quality were particularly noticeable by their absenco. Surely, then, the most profitable cattle farming to-day should be breeding. We have Noticed good lines of well-bred cows and heifers selling at anything from ,£l3 to ,£ls, and as tho demand for beef is bound to keep up for a considerable time, on account of the general shortage throughout the world, allowing on average each heifer, in seven years to have soven calves, taking into consideration tho losses at calving time, etc., and other risks, what a handsome profit is still returned to tho grazier. We have heard of one settler in t'he Wairarapa district being offered by a reputable firm £7 a head for all his steer calves at weaning time for a period of four years. The war has caused such a shortage of beef throughout the jvorld that it will take years and years to build-up the deplenished herds again, and local farmers, in fact farmers throughout the Dominion, will do well to pay particular attention to this most important branch of farming. At Pahiatua, on Thursday next, the Wairarapa Farmers' Co-operative Association havo an exceptionally good yarding of wellbred female cattlo, referred to in an advertisement. Tho sale starts punctually at 11.30.
